My husband just got a new job based out of New Castle, so we will be relocating from Northwestern NJ. We are absolutely clueless when it comes to DE. Please help!! We would be looking for a house in the $150-200 range (if possible).
What are some good, safe, family neighborhoods? (We have a 4 month old son and dog)
Where are there good schools?
Any good daycares? Cost? (In NJ, it's about $1500/month)
I would appreciate any info. Thanks so much!!
Re: Moving to Northern DE - Need help!!
Can't think of any off the top of my head. What neighborhoods are you considering and maybe I know something about them.
Appoquinimink is the up and coming district. It is in Sothern New Castle County. Where is the job? Alot of people leave in the MOT area and commute. It is about 1/2 hour.
Hello. Just joined the bump!
I live in Bear...though the whole town is not the Appo. school district, so you have to be careful. I do think this school district is one of the best in the state, and it seems to be getting better while some of the other districts are declining. New Castle County also has great Charter schools if you get stuck in a school district you are not crazy about.
I think the only housing you may find in this area for that price range will be a townhouse, though the further south you go, through Middletown and Townsend, the prices get lower. We got a townhouse in Bear in late 2009 for $217,500. There is a lot of new construction in the area too.
I do not know any daycares. I am only 17 weeks with baby#1, so I havent gotten that far yet. Good luck with the move!
Oh - and my SIL lives in northwestern NJ - in Vernon / Sussex County. We love going up there but could never move because the property taxes are insane!
I live in Bear now, but lived in Middletown from 2000-2006 so hopefully I can answer any questions.
I agree with pp that Middletown is where you can get more value for your $$. Alot of new construction. I work at a child care center in Odessa (the town next to Middletown), but we do not take infants. There are ALOT of centers in the area. I cannot recommend any since I don't know anyone who has gone to any, but I THINK the one up the road charges $220 a week for infants.
I live in this area as well- however I'm right over the PA state line. You can find some great homes in Elkton, MD. as well as the Avon Grove School District (Southern chester county, PA) in that price range...
Out here, it's pretty common to commute a half hour or more to work- I used to drive an hour every day. However, I grew up in Delco, and it was a 10 minute drive, tops, usually.
TTC since 12/17/11
BFP 02/19/2012
M/C 03/05/2012 *we love you, angel*
I'm moving to Northern DE this summer too, from DC. I've been having the same concerns about neighborhoods, daycares, etc. If you get any good info, can you share?
DH I have a 19 month-old son, and we have a dog too. Though our son isn't school age yet, we've been thinking that the Appoquinimink school district, though impossible to spell/say, is our best bet too. Heard great things about Hockessin, and the Red Clay Consolidated school district, but might be a bit expensive.
Just got my BFP last week, waiting to meet with my OB to get the final word. Before then, I was looking at La Petite and The Goddard School as possible daycare options for DS. Now I have to go back and rethink with an infant on the way around December!
Thanks in advance for sharing any tips!
I live in Wilm, right outside of Elsmere, and I love my neighborhood, we have lived here for 2 1/2 years its a nice quiet neighborhood. I work at the Goddard School in Hockessin, my son goes there too, I enjoy it as a workplace and a daycare.
I am not familar with the Middletown/Bear area...but I have heard good things about the Appo. School district.
Pike Creek area is nice too, not sure about the prices in that area.
I just saw someone replied saying they were moving to DE from DC- me too! currently in the process.
delaware today has an edition right now all about good places to live in DE, ranks areas by safety, schools, etc. you might want to check it out.
I can tell u daycare runs anywhere from $100 and up for 1 week of daycare. I hope u have luck finding a nice home and neighborhood for you and your family.
sincerely,
Valerie from Middletown,DE
