Preemies

Re: Bad news for Preemie Mamas

  • I was just coming to post this. I'm going to email Aetna right now and see what their plans are.

  • I know.  The thing that I can't get over is that there is no justification for the price hike other than pure, unadulterated greed.  With other drugs, at least the argument can be made that they have to charge so much to pay for all the research that had gone into it.  This is not the case here.  This is a drug that has been around for years.  KV should be ashamed of themselves.
  • This makes me effing sick.  How in the hell am I, or anyone else, going to pay for this?  I have insurance, but don't have prescription copays, so $1500 a pop for me.  Fvckers.

  • :(  I credit this drug for helping get my second baby to term.  Sickening greed.
  • How awful!

  • Boo!  Boo!

     As the article states:

"Doctors say the price hike may deter low-income women from getting the drug, leading to more premature births. And it will certainly be a huge financial burden for health insurance companies and government programs that have been paying for it."

There was a discussion about is on the It's a Preemie Thing Facebook page yesterday.

  • This is one of the best examples ever of what's WRONG with America's FDA. Years ago I had an Australian roommate who was a pharmaceutical sales rep (and former ICU RN). She used to rant and rave about how terrible the FDA is. This certainly proves her 100% correct. I am outraged. Greed, avarice, and wanton disregard for the safety of mothers and babies.
  • How awful! I was planning to ask about the shots for my next pg but my doctors were using a slightly later due date based on a late ultrasound so I doubted I'd qualify. Now there's no chance.... Crying
  • I truly believe that this shot combined with bed rest and a rescue cerclage was all that kept my DS in the oven 10 weeks longer than I could keep his sister in the oven.  Setting aside my heartache over her time in the NICU, DD's care cost 3/4 of a million dollars due to prematurity.  DS was in the Special Care Nursery 5 days.  My heart is breaking for other mamas trying to stay pregnant out there.

I know!  Which our insurance would cover-- as long as we would kick in the 20% copay which came out to $844 per shot (she needed five shots). We had to apply to multiple copay assistance programs in order to actually afford them.  I feel like this will be the same thing for the progesterone shot.

  • This makes me so sad.

  • That's scary!

I think this stat is way off - "The cost of care for a preemie is estimated at $51,000 in the first year alone."

Our bill for doctors alone was over 80k and that did not include the hospital bill. We were in the nicu 7 weeks I can't imagine the bill for longer!

  • The more I think about this the more angry I get. Coporate greed is outrageous! I think we should start a website KVPharmaceuticalsucks.com. Why would the government support a monopoly like this? Sure quality will go up but isn't there another way?
