Babies: 9 - 12 Months

The thought just came to me.

Once you've weaned DC from the bottle what do you give them at night when they wake up and they're thirsty or hungry?

DD STTN (mostly) but still wakes up between 4-5am. I figure she must be hungry as it's been about 10 hrs since she last ate. So I give her a bottle and she goes back to sleep for another few hours.

So what do I do when she's over a year old and not drinking from bottles anymore? A sippy cup of milk? Water? Do I sit there while I wait for her to finish it?

These are the random things I think about at night, lying in bed when I can't sleep.?

  • I haven't thought about it, but DD can go at least 12 hrs at night without eating. She hasn't ate during the night since 5 months.

Your DD is probably waking out of habit and not out of hunger.

  • I pray to God DD is STTN when she turns one.  That is when I plan on getting rid of the bottle and introducing whole milk.

You should probably talk to your pedi since your DD deserves some lineancy.

Also, it is not encouraged to give DC any milk in the middle of the night. It is bad for their teeth unless you plan on wiping them clean.

  • My DD used to wake at 5am to be fed.? Last week, she decided that was no longer a good idea, and stopped waking (now that I say that, she'll be up at 5 tomorrow for sure!).? I don't know about when they get milk (I try not to think about her being a year!), but you may find that she no longer gets up at that age.
  • On the rare occasions that DS wakes up at odd hours (he usually sttn) he is hungry. I think that if DC wakes up in the middle of the night past 1 year, that you could probably sit with her to give her a bottle or sippy.
  • At a year they should be able to go 12 hours without formula or food. It shouldn't be out of hunger...even as early as 3 months old they can go 8 hours (according to the book The Baby Whisperer).

They might get thirsty though (especially if crying) so I might think to offer an oz of warm water.

Don't give milk in bed, it's full of lactose, a sugar and will rot teeth. Same goes with juice or any food.
