Two Under 2

When did your two begin to share a room?

We have a two bedroom house and DD is a wonderful sleeper- 7pm to 7am - so I want to keep that going as long as possible with the new baby. So we are getting a mini crib for our room for the first four months or so then move them in together...eek!  I guess we will move the mini crib in rather than putting DD1 in a big girl bed.

SO! tell me your transition story if they share a room. Any tips?  This is by far the thing that is making me the most nervous.

  • They've shared a room from birth. DS has always been a good sleeper. From the time he was born, we always kept the house noisy-TV or music on, dogs barking, etc so he never got used to sleeping when it was completely silent. When DD cries, he sleeps right through it.

Are they both still in cribs?

No. DS bedshares with us, and DD is in a cosleeper next to the bed, so she's crying like 2 feet away from him. lol. He sleeps right through it.

  • Oh ok. Yeah they will be in their own room. But it sounds like it has worked for you guys to have them sleep in close proxmity :)  DD is light sleeper, she needs a dark, quiet room and she will sleep all night.  That is what makes me nervous.

If she is a light sleeper, that might be a problem. However, if you can keep LO2 in your room until she STTN consistently, you'll be fine. At 4 months, (hopefully!) she'll be sleeping long stretches and will be close to STTN if she isnt by that point.

  • We put ds#2 in with ds#1 when he was 5 months. They were both in cribs at the time. Ds#1's crib has since been converted to a toddler bed. It has really worked out great. They sleep through 99% of each others noises. I think even if we moved to a larger house I will still have them share for now.

Ditto this, except both of mine are still in cribs.  We waited until DD was STTN (or close to it).  We only have problems when DS wakes up yelling overnight, he will wake up the baby, but when DD wakes up, DS is usually fine...and he was always a light sleeper, so I am not sure when that changed!

  • They have always shared a room (since birth).  However, for the first month or so I would put my bigger guy down in my bedroom at night and then put him in his crib their room.  I asked my pediatrician when I should stop doing that and put them both in the room at the same time and she said right away because they needed to get used to each other.  It worked out totally fine- my bigger guy was also a great sleeper and the new baby being around didn't change that.  :)
