How warmly should I dress a newborn?

Hi everyone :)  Usually I can find answers to my questions in other posts, but I haven't found an answer to this one yet, so here goes for my first post! :)

How warmly should I dress a newborn baby?  I'm around Easter, and it is just getting hotter and hotter.  We keep our AC at around 80 degrees during the day and it kicks down to 78 at night.  We received some really warm clothes for the baby as a gift, including a fleece swaddler, but I think that they'd be too hot to use in this weather.  Any advice?

Re: How warmly should I dress a newborn?

  • You definitely won't need the fleece swaddler...lol.

In the really hot weather, you want the baby to be as comfortable as possible. I kept my son in one piece cotton rompers that snapped at the bottom most of the time. They have the same type of one piece sundresses for girls. If it is cool in the house during the day, you can put a lightweight blanket on the baby.

At night I swaddled my LO's, so I just put them in a onesie not to overheat them.  Once I didn't swaddle anymore, I put them in very thin long sleeve footed pajamas so they wouldn't be cold with the AC running. The thin cotton play and sleep pajamas they sell in 3-packs in Target are perfect.

  • My pedi told me, as a general rule of thumb...always dress them in one layer more than you would dress yourself.

DD was born in July...she was mainly in short-sleeve onesie or dresses, sometimes with lightweight cotton pants (our house is cold)...or a lightweight blanket covering her legs. At night, she wore a thin, cotton, footed pajama and swaddled. When we stopped swaddling, she wore a footed pajama. DS right now wears a thin, footed pajama with a halo sleep slack, because whenever I went in to check on him (before the sleepsack), his skin was always freezing.

    This exactly.

Only difference is after the swaddle he still slept with 2 thin flannel blankies and his comforter. We keep the air @ 65 at night and he loves sleeping with blankies all around him.

OMG I'd freeze!! We put it down to 75 at night and I'm freezing! I'd hate to see your electric bill, LOL

  • it's actually not bad lol about $95-$110 a month for our 3 bedroom. I keep the a/c at 70 during the day & 65 at night. i run the dishwasher about twice a week and do about 3-4 loads of laundry in our stackable every week. i think the highest bill we have ever had here was $160 last summer when I was pregnant and kep the a/c at 60 24/7. J loves the cold so the temp here works great for everyone :)
