I would never be able to ask people to remove their shoes in my house. I admit I would side eye anyone that asked me to do it
When this comes up I always think of the episode of SATC when Carrie goes to a party and everyone has to remove her shoes, and at the end of the night her Manolo's are gone. Then the host judges her for spending so much money on shoes
We don't ever wear our shoes inside.. by "allow" I mean the kids can't wear their shoes either. I would never ask a guest to remove their shoes either.
I think it is often a regional thing. I live in the Northeast and the winters are so messy, shoes would track in all kinds of mud, snow, salt, etc. And our yard is sandy and we have a pea gravel patio, so summertime is just as bad.
Everyone I know here in the Northeast takes off their shoes inside, and they usually have mats right inside the front door, so I always take off my shoes.
Not being judgey, it would just make a mess for us and so we avoid it.
We only do shoes off when it is snowy/slushy out. I grew up in southern California and no one I knew ever did shoes off. Here in Boston it seems about 50/50.

Everybody that knows me knows not to wear shoes in our house and everyone is ok with that... I see it has your shoes have been in dirt, oil from the cars, and who know what else people step on, on a day by day basis... then you bring that into your mom where your kids play on and sometimes fall asleep on... to each its own... this is just how I am... and I love it!!!

We're not in the Northeast but this is how we are...it's so easy to track dirt in. We have mats by the door and a sign asking people to please remove their shoes. If someone prefers to wear them though (like my grandparents), we allow it. I usually remove my shoes when entering a house (for the same reason as above) unless the owners say otherwise.

I live in the lake effect snow capital of the world. I get it. I'd prefer people not wear shoes, but I would NEVER tell guests that. Its just rude. Sorry it is. Crazy, I know, but I clean the floors when we have guests who wear shoes. IMO, its up to me to have to deal with the fallout if I'm anal....I would never put that on my guests.

This. I have light colored hardwood throughout so they get all kinds of marks from shoes. Shoes carry tons of gross stuff. I dont understand how some people are okay with that.

We don't wear shoes in our home and expect that other's would take their shoes off as well. It's pretty much a common courtesy where I live (Northern NY) and I'd say most people do this.
I would probably never actually ask someone to take their shoes off because I would feel bad but I'd be pissed if someone walked on my white carpet with dirty shoes.
I seriously can't comprehend how this isn't the norm everywhere else. I have always removed my shoes in other homes unless I was told otherwise. Some people do wear shoes in their homes around here but not many, and I feel their their floors are just gross because of it.
Here 98% of people don't wear their shoes in the house, so it's not an issue. Everyone goes to take off their shoes automatically, unless they're then told to leave them on.
This has got to be a regional thing! I'm in So. California and I have never been asked to remove my shoes. I suppose I would expect it if it were muddy or snowy outside. I can't even imagine being invited over to dinner and have the host ask everyone to remove their shoes. What do you do if a guest has a foot odor problem? How embarrassing for them.
I have dogs. And unless I am going to keep them locked up in a mud room (not something I can do in the house we are renting here in Germany...so this is a moot point), it is pretty pointless to get all anal about what PEOPLE may be tracking into my house.
I KNOW what my dogs are.
With that being said, I vacuum every day (have to do that for the fur anyway - keeping fur down keeps the doggy smells down), swifter the floors every other day and steam clean the carpets at least once a month.
Also, I have really stinky smelling feet. I mean, I have been to the doctor to fight them, smelly. I would hope that a HOSTESS would weigh my embarrassment (and her sense of smell) against her need for a pristine house and come up with the correct answer.
I would be so uncomfortable if anyone ever asked me to remove my shoes in their house. What if there was hole in my sock or I was wearing stinky leather sandals? Plus it's just...I don't know, I just don't think it's something you ask grown men and women to do.
Then again, like pp, I've had a dog for the last 13 years who comes and goes from outside as he pleases, so to freak out about what people track in would be silly.
We don't where shoes in the house on a regular basis and I have no shame in asking people to remove their shoes if it's been raining/snowing out, but I don't make a big deal about guests and their shoes since our whole downstairs are hardwood laminate. Although, no one is allowed to wear shoes upstairs since that is carpeted.
We never wear shoes in the house. Most guests know that, so they take theirs off without asking. For the ones that don't, we nicely ask them to take them off. We have cream colored carpet, and I do daycare. I'd like to have clean carpet for the kids!
I would never track snow, mud and water through anyone's home and I can't imagine why anyone would. We always take our shoes off. I would prefer if other people did as well but I don't tell them to. When Daniel starts crawling I will but I don't expect a lot of company then anyway!

We don't wear shoes in our house and expect guest to remove their shoes as well. It was the way I was raised. My DH was not raised this way and was a small issue when we first got married. But now that we have DS he completely agrees with me. DS plays on the floor and will soon be crawling. I keep the floor as clean as possible and shoes just track in to much.

Same here. My kids play on our floor. Your shoes step in dirt, pesticide, oil, FECES, God know what else. I don't have a problem asking people to leave them at the door. Most do so automatically.

I cannot imagine not "allowing " shoes. How condescending/rude is that (unless yo live where the culture is different) to ask people to do that?
That being said, H and I remove ours when we enter our house.

This thread is seriously blowing my mind. I have never been asked to remove my shoes and do not know anyone that requires this.
I have also lived in the Northeast my whole life
