stripping membrane question

when talking to my doctor this morning about a scheduled induction I asked her about stripping my membranes first and she said that's what happens when they give internal exams.  I thought these were two different things.  although at yesterdays appt when she gave me an internal , it hurt so bad i could barely breath through it, i swear it felt she was digging for gold or something, worst one i've had yet.  so hopefully she ruptured something then.  i was hoping she could rupture membranes and then that would help me go into labor in the next week instead of induction but apparently its the same thing as an internal exam which i thought was odd.

Re: stripping membrane question

  • I have "internals" every week since I was 37 weeks. All my OB does is stick her fingers way in there to check and see if i'm dilated. When she "sweeps the membranes" it's a totally different thing. She has not been able to do that because I haven't been dilated.

For me the internals don't hurt super bad just uncomfortable but the membranes sweep does (or so I've been told)

  • From what I know, stripping membranes is completely seperate.  It does sound like your doctor did that though.  Mine stripped mine yesterday and there was way more pressure than a normal internal.
  • Yes, they should be two different things.  Plus you cannot have your membranes swept if you are not dilated.  To that, I think that the more dilated you are the worse the internals feel.  I am having mine swept tomorrow morning as I'm being induced next weekend...hopefully it works for both of us!

  • Internal exams are diffrent or should be. They stripped mine today after the normal internal and it hurt a lot but my dr asked if I wanted her to do it I went from 1cm to 2cm after it was done. I don't get why yours would have done it without asking first considering its not nessacery. It felt like she shoved her finger around the edges of a circle when she did mine.

  • I thought I was just having a normal internal today, but my doc did it and said she was going to be "vigorous".  It was awful, very painful.  I have been super uncomfortbale since.  I guess she ruptured my membranes too.  She said it should get things moving a lot quicker.  I went from 1cm and 25 percent on Tuesday to 2cm and 75% today, so maybe I'll have a baby this weekend!
