Dumb question, Orajel on nipples for EP?

I am an exclusive pumper (no nursing), and sometimes my nipples just get really sore and hurt. I was wondering if I could put Orajel on my nipples if I wiped it off before pumping, or if it got into the bloodstream and into the milk? I know I should ask my DR, which I will do tomorrow morning when we see the pediatrician, but I figured I'd throw it out there...

  • I would try lanolin.  It's recommended for sore/cracked/chapped,etc. nipples and is fine to leave on even when baby latches, so it wouldn't be a concern at all for pumping.  I wouldn't use Orajel on anything other than in my mouth.

  • Lanolin is alright but it is really sticky.  Try First Years Nipple Butter or Earth Mama Angel Baby Natural Nipple Butter.

Medela lanolin isn't very sticky more like a lotion.

  • Yeah. I currently use Lanolin, and Medela is WAY better than Lansinoh brand. Not as thick. I was just looking for something to numb the pain a little.

  • I start it off on the lowest setting and turn it up to about 1/4 of the way (still pretty low) once it kicks into the 2nd mode. I have the Medela In Style so I can adjust it. I also know I have the correct breast shield size, its just the constant pumping every 2-3 hours that make my nipples sore. It doesn't hurt after the first minute and it doesn't hurt after I'm finished, just initially it shocks a little. And then I'm sore. I kept thinking it would get better (like its supposed to with breastfeeding) but its not really changing. Oh well.

Good to know! I decided I didn't like Lansinoh after my 1st baby so I'll check out the Medela stuff =)

  • Warning - the Medela stuff stains.
