pacifiers?

I have never had this problem and I am not sure what to do....

Xander has never really taken a pacifier. He was preemie and barely made a peep until he was about 4 weeks old and he seemed content without one so we never really offered one. Over the last couple weeks, he has started fussing a bit at times (not worried, nothing excessive) so we have been offering one.

He can not seem to keep it in his mouth. I have tried the green "soothie" brand and the NUK. He takes a few sucks and it seems to fall out. He will fuss or kick around and you put it back in and he seems content... then it falls out. Part of me says, "You little stinker, you're playing games with me already!" but the other parts says that he is too little for that. Last night, as he was super happy and even fell asleep using it but I had to hold it in there for him.

Could this be a lazy suck because of being preemie? He takes a bottle just fine. Should I quit giving it to him since he doesn't keep it in there on his own? Does it mean he doesn't want it? He likes it while he does have it in there... I have never had a baby that didn't keep it in there on their own. WWYD?

Re: pacifiers?

  • my little one does this too. We have a pacifier where from the hospital that you have see into the nipple slightly and it appears like her tongue kind of does a wave while she sucks. We primarily breastfeed. I'm not sure if that's why or what. i'm not stressing it too much cause we've been trying to avoid the paci anyways.  but it's nice to now i'm not the only one with this going on.

  • my niece did this too. my sil said that with the next kid she just held the paci in their mouth longer for them and eventually it stopped coming out. it took a month or two though.

  • My ped told my with my 2nd child that babies can't hold a pacifier in their moths until about 8 wks. The tongue has to learn to suck back, not forward like they do to nurse a breast.

however, I have some MAMs and my LO loves it.

  • I never wanted Clara to have a paci but it's ended up being one of those "I'll never do x" things that just didn't work out that way.  We started giving her one when she was sick in the hospital to keep her comfortable, and she liked them and now there's no going back.  Anyway, she has Soothies and Nuks.  She likes both, but yeah, they both fall out of her mouth all the time, especially when she turns her head to the side or puts her hands up by her face.  The Soothies are especially hard for her to keep in; I pretty much have to hold them in the whole time.  Based on that I sort of doubt it has anything to do with your little guy being a preemie or having a weak suck, because neither of these apply to Clara and she has the same issues.  I think they're just hard for such little babies to keep in for whatever reason.

  • Have you tried the paci's that have something for them to hold on to? Like this one?

My daughter uses this one and it helps hold on to it herself much easier than the ones without it...you may try it!

  • My preemies love the Avent ones - they are a little flatter and not so round like the soothies. They even took them in the hospital.

  • We use mams and DD loves them.  She hated the soothies and didn't like the tommee tippees. She even used the mam in the hospital

  • My little man does the same thing with both brands and I have found myself holding my pinky in the soothie one to keep it in his mouth until he falls asleep (or I fall asleep)

  • We had the same problem with the hospital Soothies. He could never keep it in his mouth! We bought a variety of brands and when we gave the Avent ones to him, he sucked right away and has kept it in his mouth so much better.

We use and love the Avent ones. Lena was a bit early and they blame some of her BF issues on being a late term preemie- her suck isn't strong enough so we had some problems and I think it might be why she also had problems with the paci at first. It took some time for her to be able to keep the paci in her mouth, but now she LOVES it :) I've been considering the mam ones as well since they have a similar shape.

  • My DD will only take the gumdrop brand she got from the children's hospital when she got readmitted. They gave us a NUK at the hospital she was born at. I have tried several other brands I recieved at my showers and she doesn't want any of those. Just the gumdrop! They only gave me one so I went on amazon and bought a 5 pack. :)
