I spoke to my doctor about getting the Mirena when I had my annual visit last week. He told me that he would have his nurse call to pre-certify it, and then I could just schedule the appointment when I was ready.
The doctor's office called today and told me that I have no pharmacy benefit for it, so I would have to pay out of pocket for it. I can use my medical coverage for the insertion fee, but that's essentially out of pocket too, since I haven't met my deductible for the year yet.
Is it typical for this to be billed as a pharmacy item instead of billed to medical insurance? I don't know any other way around it aside from using FSA funds or switching doctors that might bill it differently. I'm pretty bummed.
Re: Questions about Mirena
I'd definitely call around to see if it's always billed as a pharmacy benefit. I guess it kid of makes sense, because other birth control that you take is a pharmacy benefit, but I just don't know.
I paid out of pocket for mine, but my insertion fee was covered by insurance. We paid around $850 for mine, if I remember correctly.
That would be thebomb.com. Let me know! The sooner I get this taken care of, the happier everyone in my house will be.
