We aren't really going to decide until I'm on maternity leave. I will be on leave for 7 mos but most of that is unpaid. We are trying to estimate how well we can live on just DH's paycheck now, but it's going to be hard to get an accurate estimate before baby arrives. (ie. we are spending $ now on some things (like movies and dinner dates) that we won't be when baby comes...but we also don't have baby expenses now.) So once I go unpaid on leave, we will have a better idea of where things stand.
At the very least, I would love to go back part time instead of full, but we'll see.

We had originally planned to do daycare, but after we thought about it, made the decision for me to be a SAHM...i just can't see putting a 6 week old in a daycare, plus being a mommy full time is something i've always wanted to do!
We didn't plan for it to happen, but I'll be staying home. I've been out of work since a month or two before I got pregnant. I can't find anything in my field (archaeology) and normal jobs won't hire me because I'm over qualified or they're afraid I'll work for them for a week and then ditch them for something in my field. Now no one will hire me because they take one look at my belly and figure out that I'll be taking a lot of time off really soon.
We talked it over, and we figured that my joblessness was a blessing in disguise. I really can't imagine parting from my baby that quick and that often. I also plan to exclusively breastfeed and cloth diaper, which really doesn't mesh well with daycare. I used to work daycare too. I'd probably be incredibly over protective about it and rule out every place in town for one silly reason or another. Hubby just started a second job this month that pays twice what his old one did. And once his contract with the old one is up this summer, he'll be working less hours with more money coming in. So it kind of worked out for me to stay at home. I think in the long run it will be better for all three of us.

this! it is very hard to get a teaching job in MI with all the funding cuts a lot of positions are being eliminated. I can always sub if we need more money but i really feel like this was meant to be. I may also go back to school and start on my masters and endorsements on my certificate. (I also have been working full time since i was 18 and at 27 I kinda want a break and time to spend with my family)
I was a full timer until my first one 4 years ago. I have been since then. We budget so that I can stay home with the boys. Something I wouldn't trade in!! I love it! (okay to be honest, I'm ready when DS starts preschool in the fall! lol)

it is kind of scary cutting down to one income, especially since i make a decent wage, but to me, i'd rather live without for awhile and spend that time with my child. I'm very excited!! I do some freelance on the side, so i plan do continue some of that to bring in some extra bucks!
I'm currently a SAHM with my 5 and 3 yo. I actually just quit working this past summer bc DH took a new job and we moved and we decided I would stay home to help transition the kids. Well, then I got pg and honestly, the cost of daycare for an infant and preschooler in this area is so expensive that it's not worth me going back. Money is tight and I was hoping to do something PT but it's really hard to get PT care for an infant around here. DH works for a school/church and they are considering hiring me a couple hours/day to be the lunch lady and do a little clerical work and will allow me to take the baby along so I'm seriously thinking about doing that.
I will be. After a year or so I can start working out of the home when I have some time if we need to pick up some more money.

I tried to be a SAH with DD. I stayed home for 9 months, but I started to get depressed and felt useless. I realized I needed a job even if only 2 or 3 days a week to keep my sanity. I work part time second shift so DD is always home with one of us. With this baby I"ll take my leave and go back to work.

I'm currently a full-time student and I work. I'll be quitting my job to SAH when I'm not in classes. Once I finish my degree (right before LO's 1st birthday), I'll probably be looking for a full-time job, but my goal is to eventually be a SAHM.

I went back full time after a 3 month maternity leave until DS was 8 months old. I couldn't handle it, so I got a totally new very part time job (2 days per week). I'll be quitting that to SAH full time in May. Honestly, I'm a little scared! It'll be nice not to have to worry about arranging for childcare though.

I have always wanted to be a SAHM but will probably work at least part time mainly for financial reasons but I am just finishing my bachelors degree and don't really want to face the fact that I did all of that work for nothing. As of right now I am still looking for a job but we will see what happens as my tummy starts to get in the way at the interviews.

I took 5 months mat. leave with DS then went back to teaching full time for 5 months and started a full-time masters program. After 2 months of the full time work/school/mom madness, I quit my job. Going to school 2 nights a week and staying home with DS all day, every day has been a great balance so far! School loans are keeping us afloat the same as working + childcare and we'll be even better off than we would have been with me working and paying for 2 babies in daycare after LO#2 is born. I'm considering going straight through for a PhD now as I've always planned on getting one and it would allow me to stay home with the kids until they're ready to start school!
Probably just for the first six months, I've got expensive student loans that need to get paid though or it would probably be longer. I know what you mean though of all my friends only one is a SAHM, and that's because her hubby makes six figures. If we could all be so lucky!

Me too! I've always made my career my priority and becoming a new mom at 42 is completely foreign and scary. But I can't wait to meet him and I just know it's going to be the best thing that ever happened to me.
I'm SAH unless our financial situation compells me to go back to "conventional" work. I say "conventional" because I am trying to finish my first novel, but there's no actual income from that just yet - I'm hoping that changes in the near future...
Me; & feel very blessed to do so. I never saw myself as the SAH type but I can tell I am not gonna wanna leave this lil peanuts side so come August you'll find me on that Board!
