Strep / ear infections anyone?

I havent' been online much lately, but some of you may have noticed on facebook that DD has been sick - of course, just as I came back to work (TTT, I know you can relate). Well, I took her to the doctor last Friday just because she was so miserable and kept crying in her sleep, etc. She also got a gofy rash that looked like mosquito bites with a white head on them. Those went away in a day or two, but she was still feverish all weekend and it even got up to 103.7. So, I took her back Monday morning and the doc said she was going to test her for strep even though she didn't have a red throat, but she did have the other sign - a strawberry tongue. Then she looked in her ears and said change of plan - she had an ear infection so since she was going to be giving an antibiotic anyway, she would just give us one that covered the current strep strain too (apparently the current one is amoxil-resistent). She we got omnicef. My question is how long before she isn't contagious any more (I thought it was 72 hours after starting an antibiotic but I am not positive.)? Also, how much longer before she is back to her old self? She is less whiny and cranky but she still is very whiny and I am starting to lose my patience more quickly with her when I am trying to take care of her and DS at the same time.

She has only ever had one ear infection before and her behavior never really changed then.

  • An ear infection, and the associated pain that comes with it, take awhile to get better.  Are you giving her motrin along with the antibiotic?  I think our pedi said it typically takes about 4 days to notice real improvement, even on an antibiotic.  I also don't particularly like Omnicef -- it causes some real digestive issues with my guys (read: yucky diapers/loose stool).  She may have some discomfort associated with that, too.

If she started the antibiotic on Monday, she should not be contagious anymore.  Justin had it over the winter and we had to keep him home from preschool for 48 hours (per pedi).

  • Well, if she would actually eat, then I might have to deal with stools, but she still doesn't have her appetite back and she fights me every step of the way with the motrin. I may start sneaking it into some milk or something though to see if that helps. Her fever broke, so I didn't think too much about the motrin any more after that.
  • Keep in mind that my kid is older, but she was in the ER yesterday with a temp of 103.9 and an ear infection. She was given a double dose of zithromax (sp?) the first day and I was told she wouldn't be contagious after 24 hours. They also said to administer Tylenol/Motrin for at least 48 hours for the pain.
  • She probably has ear pain.  I doubt if her throat hurts anymore, but the ears usually hurt for a little while.  I'd try it just to see if it will alleviate discomfort.

FWIW, Kroger's brand of ibuprofen comes in some orange flavor that Justin will drink like it's a wonder drug.  Just a thought, if she doesn't like the regular stuff.

I think she is just done with medicine. I even let her pick some out, but that didn't work. She hates the bubble gum and grape, so I went to the dye-free berry stuff from walgreens, but nope, didn't like that either. I may have to try the orange though.

Have you tried the Tylenol chewables? Those are the only kind my children will take.

That worked twice but the second time, she acted like it was the most disgusting thing she put in her mouth, but I made her finish chewing it anyway even though she did succeed in spitting some of it out.
