Was your child crawling at 10/11 mos?

We are already in OT and might now also need PT, I'm just curious if your child was not crawling at 11 mos if you had to do physical therapy? Thanks!

Re: Was your child crawling at 10/11 mos?

  • Gavin never crawled. Heck, he still doesn't really know how to do it efficiently! But he did do this butt shuffle thing to get where he was going.  It really concerned me b/c he had no desire to put weight on his arms- he never did tummy time either- just screamed if we put him on his tummy.  And I really thought that something might be wrong. But then he started walking 2 weeks before his birthday so no, we never did physical therapy.  I will say that when he figured out how to pull himself up and stand... it was only a matter of days before he took steps.  That part went fast but the butt shuffle phase baffled us all.  Our pedi always told me that crawling is not really considered a milestone to them so he wasn't concerned that he never crawled.  Is she trying to get where she wants to go using other methods?

  • Both of my boys started crawling around 8-months but I see lots of kids who don't start crawling until 11 or 12 months.  Some just go straight to walking.  And some don't walk to 18-months and they are all good.
  • Both of my boys were crawling by 9-10 months, and walking by 11...but like pp have seen many kids that don't crawl until late or go straight to walking!

  • She does scoot a little on her butt to move around, she also hates being on her tummy.  The other concerning factor is that she cannot go into a sitting position from laying down and does not pull up on things.  We go to get her out of her crib in the am and she is still just laying there content.  I hope she is just a late bloomer in this category but am concerned cause she has some other developmental delays so I am a bit more cautious.  I'm going to talk to my pedi, was just wondering what others had experienced.  Thanks!
  • I'm a PT- most babies are crawling by this time but if not crawling is the ONLY issue I wouldn't be concerned.  If there are other gross motor delays or other issues medically, then PT might be a good idea.  On the other hand, it never hurts to get the eval. done- at least if she doesn't qualify you can ask the PT for some home exercises and tips!  GL

  • Alec was not crawling at that age. He actually never crawled, he did a one-armed scoot.

We did PT for Aerin for her head and they worked with her on crawling.  Our pedi never suggested PT for Alec, but if you do decide to go that route, there are lots of exercises that can be beneficial.

  • Both my cousins never crawled. They went straight from rolling to walking.

  • Hailey did not crawl until 12.5 months and started walking at 15 months. I was worried to death, but the pedi kept assuring me it was ok and she would do it when she was good and ready. Once she took off, she has never slowed down :) if it's just crawling I wouldn't stress, but if there are other things I would def talk to your pedi.
