I'm sorry if this is a dumb question: I feel like we're past the SIDS scares at this point...so when do you think it's ok to allow blankets in the crib? I still have my LO in a sleepsack, but she's growing out of it quickly and I don't know if I should buy the next size or just use a blanket.
Re: When is it ok to have blankets in the crib?
DS has had a blanket since Christmas when we bought him the dream blanket by A&A. The single layer muslin's were his lovey for awhile and he slept with them since about November.
SIDS is a concern up until a year
DD has had a blanket for about 3 months now. I'm comfortable with her having it b/c she is able to move her head and body and she "plays" with it so if there was a problem, she's able to move the blanket off of her.
I started just using a lovely square around 7 months because DS liked it next to his face. We now use a blanket too (in addition to the sleep sacks). The blanket is just a hand-crocheted one so there are a lot of wholes for air flow. DS can move it off of his face, but sometimes he likes it on his face so that's why we use the crocheted type. I'll probably switch to a different one in a few months when we get rid of the sleep sacks but this is what I feel comfortable with now.
SIDS is a risk up until a year old. My DS just wears a footed sleeper and we make sure his room is comfortable for him. He normally STTN pretty well so I guess he isn't too hot or cold. :-) My pedi did say a small receiving blanket would be fine though, but my DS is such an active sleeper it would never stay on him anyway, so there is no point.
Mom to Carter (6), and Calianne (1).
Proud VBAC, natural birth, breastfeeding, cloth diapering momma!
SIGH
This is an ongoing issue in my house.
I guess it's what you are comfortable with. My DD either STTN with the blanket and I do not...or she doesn't STTN without the blanket...either way I'm up all.night.long.
I really need to work on all this paranoia I have.
This is us to. Just a footed sleeper.
DS sleeps in footed PJ's and has since December along w/2 blankets. I just made sure they were knitted type blankets that he could breathe through it if needed.
Like PP I'm still freaked about SIDS. Lo's room is a comfortable temperature, and on cold nights we put her in a blanket footed sleeper. We never put a blanket on her. The only thing she has in her crib with her is her sea horse which we don't really use, since it makes her want to play and drag it around the crib, but keep for consistency.
I probably won't put a blanket in her crib until she's 1.
DC does put a light blanket on her when she's there. It freaked me out at first, but they are right there; I decided to chilax a little because of it.
This. DD just sleeps in a sleep sack, always has so we don't want to mess with anything since she sleeps so well.
LO wont sleep without his blanket. he has been rolling and turning around (like head to feet!) in his crib for a long time. He started pulling himself up on the side of the crib around Christmas time and I BF him. Im not concerned about him being unable to move if he cant breath properly or SIDS. Even when he is congested he moves around to make himself comfortable.
I won't flame you!! We have also used a blanket from pretty much day 1. :-)
Jake has slept with a blanket since we stopped swaddling, about 3 weeks old. When he was that little he didn't move around so much, plus I tucked the blanket in on both sides.
Now, he either kicks it off or plays with it.
We have been using this same blanket since DD was 6 months old. She rolls all over her crib so it's doesn't really cover her up. She loves to snuggle with it and actually smiles at night when we put her in her crib and cover her up.
