those with DC sttn...what happens during vacations???

Hey girls!

My DS has been STTN for a while now (finally! after a year!) and he is SOOOOOOO easy to put down to sleep now.  Well we are all going on a big family vacation to Disneyland and will be staying at a hotel while there...so my question is when I put him down to sleep do my husband and I just go to sleep as well??? B/c we usually just lay him in his crib and he goes right to bed after our little bedtime routine, but now that he won't be in his room I don't know if Ishould stay next to him in his pack n play until he goes to sleep? or let him try to do it on his own?  (We are in a regular hotel room, not a suite where he could be in his own room)  thanks for any input!!!

Re: those with DC sttn...what happens during vacations???

  • On our last trip we more or less got in bed, turned all the lights out, but would put the TV on and lay there and be super quiet and eventually she fell asleep. It was hard...don't even stress about keeping them on a schedule because it is super hard since my DD anyway thought that since we were there should try to talk to us and such and not go to sleep, but eventually she realized she was so tired and would.

  • We go to Disney a lot because we are only 1.5 hours away, and we meet my parents there and stay in a hotel with them.

When it's her bedtime I get her sound machine and turn it on under her crib so that it drowns out other sounds.  I have everyone leave the room, and I rock her and put her to sleep in the crib.  If she's not going to right to bed I go in the bathroom for a couple of minutes and let her CIO.  She's always down within 5 minutes.  When she's sleeping I take one of the covers from the bed and cover her entire crib with it, leaving room for fresh air in the back of course.  This makes a little cocoon, and with the sound machine on she doesn't hear us.  Then everyone can come back in the room, walk around, watch TV quietly, whatever.

We've never had a problem this way, but all babies are different of course!

ETA:  I should also mention that she is a little off schedule, she'll go to bed maybe an hour late and I don't try to put her down when she's not tired, but for the most part her schedule is pretty set and I do the exact same thing in the hotel as I do when I'm at home to put her to bed.  Allie would never go to sleep if we were in the same room and she knew it.  She would scream bloody murder for hours first if  we were just laying in bed near her and wouldn't take her out of the crib.

  • Our DD has been STTN since she was 4 1/2 weeks old. She sleeps in her own room and was always put down drowsy but awake in the beginning. That being said... we went on vacation in September. It was a really long road trip and we stayed in hotel rooms. Where we could we got pack n plays, however since we were also in the room if we didn't turn off the lights right away she wasn't having it. A few times she just wouldn't sleep in them and we had to have her sleep with us. (Can't really have a baby screaming in a hotel room.)

In December DD and I went to TX to see family over Christmas. My brother let DD sleep in my nephews room in his crib. (My nephew was only a couple months old so was sleeping in a bassinet in their room). The first night she woke up once but by the 2nd night she was fine. It's a big adjustment for them and they definitely know they're somewhere else.

Also DD does not like bath time anywhere other than home! She screams the whole time!!

Good luck and have fun at Disney!!

  • This has been tough for us too. It's true that it's impossible to keep the regular schedule while staying in a hotel. When we try to put put DD in a pack and play or strange crib (especially when she can see us watching TV or reading) she is wide awake and wants to play. We normally just let her fall asleep in the bed w/ us, then move her to the crib. Sometimes it is way later than her usual bedtime though.

Thanks for all the responses so far ladies!! Nice to know I'm not the only one that's thinking about sleep schedules while on vacation! LOL

I think I may try this and see if it works!  Also I'm pretty sure the timing may be off for his sleeping too.

This. We've only been away from home a couple times but when it's bed time we usually just turn lights off, lay her in bed with us or in PNP if we bring it and watch some tv and she goes to sleep. Schedules are harder on vacation so try not to stress too much, it should be fine.

  • I'm about to find out....  we're not vacationing but DD and I are flying across the country to visit my sick Gma and will be staying in a hotel.  She usually goes to bed around 8 and I don't think I'll be able to go to bed that early!  Not sure what we'll do since I can't just leave her in the hotel alone! LOL.  I'm going to bring a book.....blah.

Hope your grandma gets well soon and good luck with the sleep issue.  My DS usually goes to bed at 8 too but I'm pretty sure we won't make that time every night.

Thanks so much for all for info!! I am worried about how he is going to be back home too.
