Hawaii Babies

Had my measurement u/s today

Turns out this LO is about a 6 pound baby right now, but is in the 30th percentile.  Is the percentile part too small?  What does this mean?  They didn't seem worried about it so I wasn't at the time, but now that I'm thinking about it, it seems really small.  I don't know.

This baby does have a full head of hair already though! ;)  And we are still head down, yay! :)

first those can be totally inaccurate, but second someone has to be 1% and someone has to be 100% - everything is normal!!  Not sure why they even tell you that - especially w/out explaination.  Percentages don't matter unless the baby is not growing at his/her own defined percentage curve.  And even then it's all relative.  If the 30% guestimate turns out to be correct be happy you don't have to push out a 10# baby!!

  • Bella's always been in the lower percentage for weight except for at birth (never for height!) and it basically means out of most babies at your gestation he's in the 30%. does that make any sense? So basically he's small but that doesn't mean he's unhealthy or anything like that, it just means he's a smaller baby right now. Although baby packs on the most weight in the last 4 weeks so you still have some time to bake him. If there was any cause for concern they would let you know.

Yay for being head down and having hair :) They said that for Bella too and she was born with tons of black hair!

  • Thanks ladies!

I thought it was weird that they told me the percentile number, but they weren't concerned so I guess I shouldn't either.  Glad we are still looking normal!  And GOOD thing this boy isn't HUGE! :)

  • A was TEN days late and was only 6 lb 15 oz and less than 19 inches at birth. I don't know what the percentiles were, but they were low. He rebounded quickly though. He's now slightly above average for height and average for weight, and more importantly, has good growth curves. So try not to worry about the exact numbers. :)

  • Yeah, I wouldn't worry. I wished LO was 6lb...then maybe it would've been an easier delivery! Good to hear he's head down and everything! I'm sure he's healthy =)

  • Like the other ladies said, I wouldn't worry - there's a big margin of error on those measurements, and even if it's accurate it's still a fine weight (my dudes were born at 38w2d and were each a shade under 7lbs and very healthy little men!). And awww to the hair - I love babies with lots of crazy hair! Smile
  • yeah those estimates are sometimes WAY off... i've heard of variances as much as two pounds! 30th percentile just means that compared to ALL the other boys born, 70% are bigger than he is and 29% are smaller than he is.  like pp said, it doesn't mean he is unhealthy or anything.  it's not like a score where the higher number is better!

how cool that you know he's got hair - i didn't know 'til i started pushing! and yay for being head down :)

  • yay for head down! you're in your final weeks too!!! =) yay!!!!!

and yeah, the pedi had to explain the whole curve percentile to me too. hahahah

d was in the 30% and was 6 pounds in what would have been my 38w. =)
