NBR: need trip recommendations...

Sorry it's NBR here, but we are taking a family vacation this month to CA to visit family in San Clemente and will be spending a few days driving up Highway 1 from LA to Monterey.

Anyone made this trip before? Have any recommendations on things to do/see? We already plan on seeing the Hearst Castle and making a stop in Big Sur, Carmel/Monterey.

This is sort of our "babymoon" and will be the last vacation with just the three of us.

Also, we may spend a day in L.A. while we are in Orange County. Any recommendations of kid-friendly things to do in the area? We've done the typical Grauman's Chinese theater/Olvera street market, etc. before.

 TIA!

Re: NBR: need trip recommendations...

  • I love the drive up the 1. We checked out Hearst Castle on one of our trips; there's a lot of walking involved, just so you know. There's also a stop in between San Luis Obispo and Monterey where the elephant seals hang out; that's pretty cool. I would say wine tasting in Paso Robles, but you wouldn't really enjoy that...haha. Also, there's a blueberry farm on the way up. I'm not sure if they're in season, but if they're open, you should pick some fresh blueberries (we usually go in July, and they're huge!).

While you're in LA, check out Griffith Observatory. It's free, and it's a great view. Maybe the Getty or MOCA if you like museums. Go eat at Umami Burger; it was named the best burger in America or something like that. If you haven't been to 3rd Street Promenade in a while, check it out because there's a new outdoor mall area.

Hope that helps. Have a fun and safe trip!

  • This is the BEST trip! We love staying in Cambria (near Hearst Castle) and also in Half Moon Bay, just south of SF. But with your little, I would definitely spend a night in Monterey and visit the amazing aquarium there. Also, in San Luis Obispo there's a fun "themed" hotel called the Madonna Inn. We have stayed in the rock climbing/Alps room. It's cheesy but fun.
