NBR: Dishes

H and I have been married 5.5 years give or take and we have had probably 3 or 4 sets of dishes and as many or more sets of drinking glasses (water drinking, not alcohol).  They keep getting chipped/cracked/broken.  Seriously we aren't that hard on them (at least I don't think we are). I am thinking I must just be buying cruddy brands each time.  So I need help finding some that might actually hold up for a while.

I want the nice plates, not the corelle stuff and they don't have to be things that are kid friendly.  We have walmart plastic ones that we use so Eli can set the table and help load the dishwasher (he loves doing it himself).  These wouldn't necessarily be for "company", although we would use them for that, but Matt and I would likely be using them fairly lightly.  I prefer something that is microwave safe and whatever we get MUST be dishwasher safe.  I HATE hand washing dishes with a passion.  While I certainly can't afford an outrageously priced set, I completely don't mind putting in the money if it's something that will last given that I am tired of buying new dishes every couple of years.  The glasses need to be much more durable as we will use them A LOT and again must be dishwasher safe.

Any suggestions on places to look and specific brands you would recommend that will hold up to use?

Re: NBR: Dishes

  • We have two sets of dishes from Crate and Barrel and I really like them. The glasses, however, are a different story. We started out with 12, and are down to 4! I find their dishes to be pretty affordable, though, considering how pricey some of their other items are.

  • I know you said no Corelle but seriously my mom's last at least 15 years per set. I know a lot of ppl swear by Fiestaware but haven't used any myself.

  • I have Fiestaware and LOVE it.  We've had it for almost 4 years now and not one chip.

  • We registered for the Mikasa French countryside pattern.  I love it and its held up very well.  We've only broken 1 plate in 5.5 years and that was my fault for letting it fall.  I also love that it is so neutral and will go with everything!

  • I love our pfaltzgraff.  It is heavier, and it does take up a little more room in the dishwasher, but I can't complain about anything else.  I grew up with it as well, and we used the same plates for years.

Ours is Nautica Sloane Square banded.  I actually saw a set at Burlington Coat factory not too long ago.

  • I got plain white, square dishes from Food Network at Kohls for our wedding and we don't have any broken or chipped and it's been 3 years almost. Our glasses were pricey, but they have also held up. We haven't broken any of them. They are Mikasa but I love them!

    This. Macy's house brand.

  • We have the Noratake Colorwave from Macy's or BBB... we got it for our wedding in 2008 and none have broken or chipped. I have been very happy with them. They used to sell in 16 piece sets (4 place settings), but not sure if they do anymore or not.

  • We also have Pfaltzgraff and have been very happy.  There used to be a Pfaltzgraff outlet in Jeffersonville but it closed :(
