Would you ask for an induction?

I know the ones who are left on this board are ALL miserable and it's not just me. But, here's a little background:

I switched doctors (an hour away) at 27 weeks because I wanted a doctor that would deliver me no matter what. The practice I went to before had a weird rotation on MW's and I just didn't feel comfortable. When I switched, she asked me my reason for switching, so I told her. Her reply to that was "Unless I'm dying, I'll be here to deliver your baby! I deliver 99% of my patients babies." So, of course, I felt 100% better and knew that was a for sure shot!

At my last appointment she tells me that she's going out of town the week of my due date. Uhh...what? She said that the other doctor in her practice would deliver if she wasn't here when I went into labor. Ok, PROBLEM!

I know that inducing isn't the best option...and can be more painful, but I'm a freak about this. I want MY doctor to be there. I'm thinking of asking her my options at my appointment today. WWYD? Should I just suck it up and get over it?

Re: Would you ask for an induction?

  • Have you met with the other doctors?  I am really leery of indictions and I don't think that would be a good reason to do one especially if your baby isn't ready.  After all you may be a week late.  I woudl ask her if you could meet with the other doctors that would possibly be delivering your baby or if she recommends one over the other so you can start going to him/her now in addition to your doc in preparation that she may not be the one delivering your baby.  that way you will feel comfy no matter what happens.

  • I'm not the kind of person to induce for conveniance. I feel like baby knows when they need to come out. I'm only being induced after 41 weeks, which is when my practice does it. But hopefully I go into labor on my own before than.

    To each their own!

This exactly. I'm not a fan of elective inductions and think that inductions should only be given if there is a medical reason.

  • I wouldn't. The doctor is barely even present for a birth anymore. They come in for the last few minutes and the rest of the time you have the L&D nurses.

Personally, I couldn't care less what doctor/midwife will be there for the delivery (my OB offic has a rotation of 6 OBs and 2 midwives). I'm hoping for good nurses when I go in. I'll see the nurses for 10+ hours... I'll see the doctor for 10 minutes.

  • I would suck it up.  Honestly, you barely see your doctor when you are in the hospital/in labor.  Almost everything is done by the nurses.

For me, I went into the hospital around midnight, and I saw the on-call doctor maybe twice (for a total of maybe 5 minutes between the two visits) from the time I got there until my Dr came in to check on me around 7AM.  I saw my doctor then, and not again until I started pushing.  My doctor delivered DD, but honestly, it wouldn't have mattered either way to me at that point who did it, as long as they knew what they were doing.

Plus, there is no way to tell that you will spontaneously go into labor while your doctor is gone.  It's been said a million times on here, but 40 weeks isn't a magical number, and you could be working yourself up for nothing.

I agree with PP. Unless you absolutely hate the other docs I would just stick it out. PP is right, you probably won't see your doc all that much and the nurses will be tending to you mostly. Have you talked to your doc about this (induction)?

  • It's only one other doctor in the practice and I've never met him. I just know his name. I haven't talked to my OB about this, I'm going to today and am going to talk to her about the options! Thanks for your input, ladies!!

  • I agree with all the other ladies.  This is not a good reason for an induction!
I would rather risk not knowing the doctor who is delivering my child, than face the risks associated with inductions.

And like PP's said, the doctors barely do anything!

  • No way would I induce.  Most OBs aren't even there for the majority of your labor so IMO, it doesn't matter that much.  I'd much rather have a random person I've never met deliver my baby than undergo an induction that would increase the risk of c-section.
  • I don't really mind inductions, as long as you are favorable going into them.  Plus you must be aware of the increased risk for c-sections and stuff.

I'm electively being induced but my cervix is favorable and I was successfully induced w/ DS.  It really is just a personal decision that you should make w/ your OB.

And I agree w/ all other PP that your dr. is literally there for the last 2-3 pushes.  The nurses are who you want to be great!

  • I can understand where you're coming from- I found out that my favorite OB will be on vacation the week that I'm due- but I've made sure that I've seen multiple doctors over my pregnancy. If you're going in today, meet the new guy and discuss what you want out of a pregnancy with him. Someone else made the point that doctors are only in there for the last bit of labor anyway, and at that point you may be too focused on labor to care.

I hope it works out for you!

  • I agree with everyone's opinion on letting the baby comes when he/she is ready but I also understand you're feelings on having your doctor there. We were told months ago our ob would be out of town on our due date.. and I know everyone says you won't care when it happens... but I still do. I would voice your concerns with your doc and see what he says. Also I would plan to meet the other doctor in case you go into labor before your primary gets back. Just a face to face meeting might make you feel more comfortable.

We plan to induce at 40w4d when our OB gets back from Jamaica. I just hope LO waits!!

    Nope, I would not.

I was well aware going into pregnancy that if my doctor is not on call, she's not the one delivering my baby. Which is why I chose a two-doctor practice and have met with both throughout the pregnancy.

  • I was induced and it wasn't fun. You have to be strapped to two monitors and can pretty much only get out of bed to go to the bathroom. Mine was a complete failure and I never even contracted, but I have heard from people that the contractions with induction are 10x worse than natural contractions. So besides the pain, the annoyance of being in a bed, the increased likelihood that it won't work and result in a c-section, most places won't induce before you are actually overdue. I wouldn't ask and would just ask to meet the other doctor so you are comfortable with them.

Ok, don't hate me, but I'm not miserable at all. I know things can change any day, but I still feeling great. (And of course super sympathetic to those of you who are miserable!)

And to add to what the other posters are saying, I wouldn't induce. I've heard that a first time mom that is induced is 50% more likely to end up with a c/s.

    I completely agree with this.

OP, since there's only one other doctor in the practice, you should ask to meet him next time you're there, just so you feel more comfortable in case he ends up delivering your baby.
