do you have to fast before 1hr glucose test?

I can't remember what my instructions were.  I think it was just to drink the stuff then get blood drawn in an hour and don't eat or drink between the glucose liquid and getting blood drawn.  I'm trying to time this so I can do it when I"m already going to the doc next week which is super close to the lab.

Re: do you have to fast before 1hr glucose test?

  • I guess it depends on your doctor/lab.  I just saw a post on the 2nd tri board where someone was very surprised that her blood sugar result came back so low - but she admitted that she had eaten breakfast lunch and snacks prior to doing the test.  My doctor has always had me fast 8-12 hours.  I would say to double check with your office.

  • When I called to check, my midwife's office told me that I didn't have to, just to be sure that I didn't have 3 donuts for breakfast that day:)

  • Like you said, I was to eat normally during the day, but once I started the drink I couldn't have anything until the blood draw an hour later, not even water.

There have been a lot of questions about this, and it seems like it really varies by doctor. Your best bet is to call and ask.

  • It depends on your doctor's instructions.  I didn't have to do any prep for it.  My only restriction was nothing by mouth between the drink and the blood draw.

ETA - I had a granola bar for breakfast and my test about 2-3 hours later.  I passed

  • No.  I was told to eat protein before the visit and not to eat sugary things.
  • I just had my 24 week appointment yesterday and asked. My doctor's office has you eat normally, but like PP said, once you start the drink, no food until after the blood draw. My nurse and doctor both approved my breakfast of one scrambled egg with cheese and a piece of whole wheat toast. NO sugar or fruit they said.. BUT I have a really high sensitivity to sugar, even in fruit. I either process the sugar REALLY well and my blood sugar drops so high I get sick to my stomach OR I have GD. Guess we'll find out next month.

I would call your doctor's office and ask since EVERY one on this board seems to get different instructions.

  • I was told to not eat anything with sugar. I had a plain yogurt and plain tea and went in first thing in the morning. I passed. I would call your Dr. since it sounds like different Dr's have varying requirements.

  • I was told I didn't need to fast or do anything special before the test.  However, I plan to avoid sugary stuff and eat lots of protein for breakfast and lunch.

    Yes

  • I have my glucose test in a few weeks.  My doctor instructed me to eat protein with my breakfast before my test.  And then said that I could drink water afterwards.

  • My doctor told me to go first thing in the morning and to wait and have breakfast afterwards but he didn't specifically say to fast.  When I went in this AM they did ask me if I'd eaten so I guess that means that particular lab prefers that you fast for a little before hand.
