CD mamas of 5 mo+ babies - snaps or aplix?

i definitely prefer aplix right now, but we're about to outgrow our size 1 thirsties covers, and i can't decide if i should get the size 2's in snaps instead?  in case E decides he likes to undo velcro...

my OS dipes are a mix of both (since I was thinking aplix for daycare), but i'm wondering if i should just suck it up and get all snaps.  on the other hand, if daycares before aplix (so i've heard) - and I prefer aplix - should i just get all aplix?  or will I end up with a diaperless toddler running around the house?

i feel like i'm totally overthinking this simple decision!

  • J hasn't ever been interested in undoing the aplix but he usually has pants and shoes on so that makes it harder (although there is another baby as his daycare that ALWAYS removes his clothes so I guess it is just an interest thing).

However, I prefer snaps because after 1 year they still look new.  Aplix on the other hand... it's getting pretty worn and less sticky.  Not sure they would last another year, yet alone through another child w/out some serious TLC like replacing the aplix.

This.  I have all snaps except for one aplix.  Honestly, I don't find the snaps any harder to use, and I love that I don't have to worry about fastening the tabs for washing.  My one aplix dipe already had little fuzzies stuck to it, and I can see that the aplix won't last forever, whereas the snaps pretty much will.  And while he doesn't yet, I can totally see H pulling off his diaper the first chance he gets, so I'm all for snaps!

ooh, that's a good consideration too.  our aplix still look new, but i was using sized covers initially, and only really started using the duos maybe 2 months ago.  hrm.

and i just can't imagine E taking his clothes off by himself - I can't fathom him being old enough so quickly to do so!  but i know that day is coming... Smile

Elle is only 4 mo old but I'll chime in anyway. Our stash is mainly composed of BG 4.0s in snaps and only 6 BG 3.0s in aplix. Elle's daycare allows us to use both but recently, I bought another half a dozen of BG 3.0s in aplix for use in daycare or when grandma is watching her. I just find it easy for other people to use that since it's no different from sposies. For me however, I prefer to use snaps. So far our dipes with aplix look fine but I do not know how they will hold up in time. I do not have the time or skill to replace the velcro :-P. If you plan to use the dipes for the 2nd baby (or 3rd or 4th :-p), I say go for snaps.

Forgot about that point!  YES, snaps were BRUTAL for MIL to learn b/c I think she probably has some undiagnosed arthritis and other physical ailments going on.

She only used Aplix when she watched J for 3 weeks.

daycare center doesn't care one way or the other.

  • Good point about aplix looking worn. Ours do, but as long as they're functional, which they still are, it's not a big deal to me.

A was into pulling off the aplix, but that comes and goes, and he's never been so obsessed with it to make the diapering a problem.

If you think they're advantages to each, maybe buy one of each -- or split your order 50/50 -- just in case. My stash is always a mish mash, and sometimes I go back and forth on what I prefer anyway.

  • re: the aplix wearing down... the BG diapers are notorious for having bad aplix that won't last beyond one child.  that's why they give you replacement aplix for free!  i used the size 1 thirsties covers for 10 months with Miss A and they still look like new! there are some pills or pulls next to the laundry tabs on the inside of the cover but you can't avoid that b/c the laundry tab isn't as wide as the tabs on the wings. I have seen used diapers for sale where the aplix looks awful and it just makes me wonder how much wear/tear/use they've gone through when mine are 10 months old and still look great!

re: pulling the diaper off.... I've only had it happen once.  I had just put her down for  a nap and b/c I wasn't there to tell her no, she yanked it off! of course then i had to go in and put it back on - turned out it was wet (even though I put a fresh one on right before her nap) so who knows if it was b/c she was wet or just having fun.  in general she'll occasionally play w/the aplix on her diaper but i am sure to put a swift end to it as soon as she gets near it with a "no!" and she always stops. and really this only started in the last month or so.  I have some BG organics with snaps and I like them too but they do take longer to snap onto a squirmy toddler.

I guess I'm not sure what advice to give you, just wanted to tell you what my experience has been.

as an aside - I've been thinking more seriously about EC b/c I would really love for her to potty trained soon and the best way to do so is to be able to see when they pee to know when they're most likely to pee and to change them immediately... so using trainers or going coverless is best.  apparently there is all sorts of "EC wear" that i never knew about! there are these fitted diapers (w/video on how they work with EC here) and these can be purchased as either fitted diaper or AIOs but they are easy on/off for EC.  Miss A is way to small to fit even the smallest training pants so we might use a prefold belt or something like that.  anyway, this might all be more than what you are looking for but just wanted to give you the info b/c I just found it myself and wish I had known about it all sooner!

aww, now i'm wishing i had just gotten aplix.  Stick out tongue  i bought 3 in snaps already...i think i'll get the 4th in aplix!

thanks for the info on the EC wear!  i had never seen anything like that before - i'll have to keep them in mind for later!

  • We're Aplix all the way...I like that I can get a better fit than with snaps. Whenever I've used snaps the fit was never right. Libby has a smaller waist in proportion to her thighs and bum, so the aplix allows us to get it just right. She's only tried to open the tabs once and it was on the changing table. But I've also never just had her dressed in only a diaper. Even if it's warm, she'll be in a diaper and a onesie tee or bubble romper. Or naked!

That said, I am fully expecting to replace most of my Thirsties Duos Size 2 for baby #2 since Libby's are pretty worn...she's been in them since she was 8 weeks old (before than we has XS and S sides Thirsties and one Size 1 Duo). I've noticed that some CD mamas are concerned with keeping their CDs in in like-new condition. I am not....the way I see it...everyday undies start to wear out over time with use and washing and I expect dipes to do the same.

If we have to spend $100 for CDs for baby #2 I still figure that's a huge savings over sposies. We're just PFs and covers and some pockets for overnights so my total stash was maybe $400. I guess if I had spent more than that I'd be more focused on keeping things from wearing out.

I thought I just wasn't used to snaps, but this actually just occurred to me yesterday - I think Eric's thighs are really chunky compared to his waist, and maybe that's why I can't get a good fit with snaps?

    ugh.

As for the thirsties (both the covers and the one pocket I have) - mine got pretty trashed too.  I don't think I'm careless and I generally try to make sure ALL laundry tabs are used so I'm not sure what happened.

yeah I don't expect mine to last forever and anticipate normal wear/tear w/them but I try to keep them as nice as I can.  I hope/expect them to at least last long enough for round 2 should we have another baby.  I think it depends on the particular diaper brand but in general I think most manufacturers say that you can expect your diapers to last through about 200-300 washings.
