Baby Names

Delaney?

Hello!  I've posted a few times, but have never introduced myself.  I'm an 4th grade teacher pregnant with baby girl #2.  My first DD's name is Amelia Joy (nn Millie) and I am having a hard time finding a name for this one.  I've posted before about Adele (which I love, but everyone I discuss names with gives me a strange look).  I like the older names (Adele, Nora, Ruth...) but what do you think about Delaney?  I recently read a book where the main character's name was Delancey--is that even a name?

Thanks for your naming help; I love reading all of the advice you give others.

Re: Delaney?

  • It's not a bad name. I have a love hate relationship with it though.

In fact it's on the top of my H's favorite list. If this baby was a girl and he had his way it'd be the set in stone name around here.

For some reason I can't get fully on board. I have a more classic naming style and that doesn't seem to fit at all.

All that said, I do think it's pretty and has the potential for some fun nicknames.

  • It's not really my style, but it's definitely not the worst I've seen. For what it's worth, there is a Delaney's Irish Pub in my hometown and that's what always pops in my head first.

  • I've always loved it, and DH hates it. :-(

I like the NN Lane for a girl. Super cute!

  • I LOVE Adele, it's on our girl list.  I also love Norah, and like Ruth.

    Delaney, not so much.

  • I'm not a fan of Delaney because to me it's only good as a last name.

I like your other ideas though of Ruth, Nora and Adele.

  • I LOVE Delaney :)  It was a top runner for me, but DH vetoed it. I know a gorgeous girl named Delaney & the name fits her perfectly.

  • I like it. In fact it's on our list because it's a "compromise" name for us since we have really, really different tastes in names.

That said...I much prefer your other names, particularly Adele. It's gorgeous and sounds so lovely with Amelia. I think stylistically, the other types of name suit Amelia much better as well since Delaney has a slightly unisex and  "trendy" feel to it.

  • Delaney - AWFUL

    Delancey - WORSE THAN AWFUL

    Adele - GORGEOUS

    Nora - STUNNING!

    Ruth - LOVE

Favorite: Tie between Adele and Nora.

  • Delaney is NMS, but it's okay name.  It seems trendy to me since I've known a few babies named Delaney recently.

I LOVE Adele.  However, I'm not sure I'd use it since you already have an Amelia with an A.  I also like Nora.  I don't care for Ruth.

  • I don't like it because of an especially difficult student I had with this name.

  • It's hard naming a kid when you are a teacher!

Delaney is okay. I like just Lane or Lanie better.

I LOVE love Adele but DH vetoed it.

Ruth is underused and Norah is nice too.

  • Hi..I don't post here often but I had to weigh in on this one...My DD is Delaney! We LOVE her name for many reasons, but mostly because it's different, without being off the wall. We call her Laney or Lane most of the time. We have never once questioned our decision to name her that, it fits her perfectly! In regards to it being "trendy", I don't know any other little girls with that name. In fact, to me it seems the older names are the current trend...I know babies named Millie, Stella, Norah and Ruby, but no other Delaney's. Good luck with your decision!
  • I have a love/hate relationship with it.

Some days I think I love it and want to add it to the list, but others I just don't like it. Sorry I know this isn't helpful to you.

I like Norah. I prefer Adele as a MN (no particular reason, just do). GL

  • This was a top contender on our name list and will always have a soft spot in my heart! Love the nn Laney!
