what kind of pads are best after delivery?

I want to stock up! Do I need to get big ole fat ones or can I stick with stayfree overnights or another thinner brand? I was also wondering how long you tend to need them for?

Re: what kind of pads are best after delivery?

  • for the first week or so I was all about the big huge ones. hahaha It's enough to cre for a newborn, I didn't want to worry about leaking too!

  • I didn't have a lot of bleeding after I left the hospital.  They sent me home with a bunch of pads and it was more than enough.
  • The first day in the hospital I literally wore a diaper.  I took one of the newborn ones for DD and laid it out in the mesh underwear, lol.  After that I liked Stayfree..they may have been over night I don't remember but they were plenty thick enough and didn't have wings, I hate wings..but then again I hate pads in general.  I didn't bleed heavily for long and my pp bleeding/spotting was totally done by 3 weeks, but I EBF and I have heard that helps control the bleeding.

  • After the 2 bags were gone from the hospital?  Kotex overnights.  100% of the time.

This is way TMI, but I had Always at first - and after I was sitting down for a while, it STUCK TO MY STITCHES.  I had to get in the bathtub and peel it away slowly while using the peri bottle.  It was messy and painful.  I tossed the whole pack then and there and sent my husband out for Kotex while I sat on the toilet.  LOL!

  • I took a bunch of the mondo ones from the hospital and used those for the first week or two, then I used Always Infinity overnights until it finally stopped (about 5.5 weeks).
  • A little FYI: some women can develop rashes from certain kinds of pads after they give birth. I used Stayfree after my first, and got a very painful rash (kinda like a diaper rash). I had to switch brands. I wouldn't stock up until you know what brand works for you.

The regular Always with dry-weave contain Dry Max, which is the same chemical substance that was causing all of the chemical burns in babies using Pampers with the same material.

  • After I left the hospital I used up what the hospital had given me (in about 2-3 days), then I used Always Infinity Overnights for about 2 weeks, and then I was able to switch to panty liners. I hate wearing pads so I preferred changing a panty liner every hour or so than wearing a giant pad.

Ditto this, 1000%. ?I somehow developed an allergy to most (all?) normal brands of pads after giving birth to DS. ?Had never happened before - I wasn't a regular pad user, but would use pantyliners & tampons during AF without problems, and used pads during my miscarriage in 2007 without having any reaction. ?Anyway, the allergic reaction was HORRIBLE and it took forever to figure out what was going on - OB and I both initially thought it was a yeast infection. ?The allergy is still there - I had some spotting after my pap smear in first trimester, and wearing a pantyliner for a few hours caused a rash. ?So I'm going to buy a pack of the 7th Generation pads, and a pack of these other "Natural" pads that are supposedly made of cotton and PRAY that those don't cause the allergic reaction. ?If they do ... I have no idea what I'll do postpartum. ??

All of which is totally TMI, but I just wanted to underscore that you shouldn't stock up... or at least save your receipts!!?

I am glad to hear this! I love these! I have to say that I got a sample of them awhile ago with a box of pads and I giggled when I saw them and thought "Yeah right!" when I saw the gaps. But when I ran out of the regular ones I gave them a try and was wowed! I planned to grab these for after delivery but was slightly worried about if they would stick or become uncomfortable.

  • Be sure to avoid the pads with the dry-weave. Your stitches could get stuck in it...OWWWEEEE.
  • I have heard that the Always pads with dry-weave can get the stitches caught, so to steer clear of those... But apparently the Infinity doesn't have the dry-weave, and I have had quite a few people recommend this... This is the kind that I got, but I only got a small pack in case I don't like them.
