Hi! I'm moving from Washington, DC to the greater Seattle area at the end of the summer, so I'm lurking to try and learn more about the area. I'm married but I'll be moving without my husband because our jobs demand it. I'll have my preschooler son and a brand new baby with me, which will be a TON of fun with a demanding job.
My big conundrum is that I've grown spoiled by city life. I live in a close-in 'burb of DC that has a reputation for expensive houses (I'm the poor woman here), great schools and tons of opportunities for my little guys. And, you can't go 5 feet without tripping over another parent's opinion- helpful or not. So, if I want to live close to my job, I'll live near Fort Lewis. First question, anyone on this board from that area? I could use a lot of help, if so!
However, I'm considering making a hellish commute because I'm not sure I'll find what I want there. Not ideal because it will take even more time away from my kids, but I'm very picky about schools, nannies, museums/libraries, etc. WWYD? Can I find a happy medium?
Thanks in advance!
Re: Intro and Question
Are you working on the base or near the base? Ft. Lewis is quite a bit south of Seattle and that would be a pretty hellish commute by car. There is the Sounder train, however, that runs from downtown Tacoma up to Seattle on the weekdays.
I know one reg on the board, MrsEditorJax, lives down that way. She's always talking up the Indian restaurants down there.
Unable to even.

I don't live in the Fort Lewis area, but I wanted to say hello and welcome.
I live in Tacoma. You might be happy looking at the North Tacoma/Old Town area (kind of this area of Tacoma: https://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=tacoma,+wa&aq=&sll=37.09024,-112.5&sspn=36.042042,62.929688&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Tacoma,+Pierce,+Washington&ll=47.277191,-122.479362&spn=0.030164,0.061455&t=h&z=14 ). Welcome!
I was thinking of this neighborhood for you as well. Lots of old houses with character with shopping, parks, and museums nearby. Seattle would be WAY too far to commute to Ft. Lewis every day.
