Ok, so I looked at a picture of myself from a baby shower this weekend and my hair looks horrible. I haven't dyed it in months because I didn't want to hurt the baby in any way by breathing in any fumes or anything but now I have serious roots growing in. I found a dye that is ammonia-free & I'm wondering what you guys think and if you've discussed this with your doctors. I've read all about hair dying and there is conflicting information online and can't call my doc because he is away from the office this week.
What are your thoughts?.....
Re: Your thoughts on ammonia-free hair dye...
I get my hair dyed every 4-5 faithfully. I did the same thing with my son, and all was fine. Just make sure the place is well ventilated. you'll be fine.
I do have my colorist use semi-permanent coloring.
I've dyed mine twice with regular permanent dye, and I'll do it again before the baby comes.
My doctor said there was no documented risk, but to wait 'til second tri if I wanted to play it safe. So I did, and then it grew out, so I did it again.

I've heard a lot of conflicting stuff about this too. Online and even from people I know. My best friend was thinking of going to a cosmotology school but was worried what the fumes would do if she got pregnant. Another friend of mine just had her baby in January, and she's a hair stylist, and didn't stop working or dying her own hair. The OB nurse at my hospital told me back in October to wait until after the first trimester and use an ammonia-free dye, but when I asked my doctor at my first appointment, he said to wait until after our baby was born. I've just gone with what the doctor said. Better safe than sorry I figure.
I have read that getting highlights is better than a full-dye job because none of the chemicals come in contact with your skin, so maybe that's something you could look into?
