Would you do a vaccine study??

I just got information in the mail from Children's about a vaccine study that is available. From the looks of it its a nasal spray vaccine that may prevent RSV and Paraflue type 3.

I'm am very pro-vaccine and stay with the recommendation schedule. We don't delay or spread out either.

We would be compensated for our time and travel.

I'm on the fence. On one hand I would love to be a part of helping develop a new vaccine to help prevent these illnesses in infants, but on the other, I don't want to expose my kids to something so experimental.

So, would you be a part of the study?

Re: Would you do a vaccine study??

  • I would need more information... Is it already FDA approved and they are trying to determine the efficacy, or is the drug still in development?

MTE. If it's a drug that's already in existence and already being used (like they're testing the nasal version of a vaccine), then I'd probably consider it.

This. I would not want to open my child up for exposure .. even though such a vaccine woudl be so awesome to have against RSV.

  • I have participated in a vaccine study at Children's when I worked there - but it was me that got the vaccine. I would be much more likely to do it myself than I would enroll my kids. I am on the fence.

ETA: You could always ask to see a copy of the ICF, Informed Consent Form because it would provide you with a lot more information, including what part of the study is experimental...is it the combination, is it the administration route, is it an additive, etc.

  • Hells no!  We are pro vaccine as well and got them all right on schedule but I would not put anyone in the family in a clinical trial, medical study, or similar that required ingestion/injection of medicine.

I have a science degree and work in a related field (although not in medicine) and I think it's too risky.  The whole point of a trial is to try and confirm that nothing bad will happen based on assumptions from prior research.  That's all great and fine and usually things go well but if you are that one rare case where things go poorly, it could have lifelong effects on your health.

Maybe look for one that involves tracking things like height, weight, IQ, etc over the course of normal life but that does not involve taking medication or getting injections.
