I have two packs of bone in chicken breasts that had a sell by date of yesterday. I opened them up to prepare them and got blasted with a very strong smell. I wouldn't say it is a bad smell but just a strong one. Do you think it's gone bad? Would you cook it anyways?
Re: How do you know if raw meat is bad?
I've pitched meat before the sell by date if it has a strong odor. However, I have meat issues, so I'm probably not normal.
I have cooked chicken before if it was only a day past the sell-by date, but I don't know if I would do it if it presented a strong smell. I'm very leery about poultry going bad, more so than other meats.
However, I doubt that it's bad if the sell-by date was only yesterday. Has it been in your fridge the whole time, or was it frozen? If it was frozen, I would think it is OK.

It's been in the fridge. I kept meaning to freeze it but I've been having an (extra) ditzy week.
I'm wary about meat too so I guess I'll just err on the side of caution even though it leaves us with nothing for dinner tonight.
I hate when this happens. It's why I always have pasta in the house, and barring that, the number to LaRosa's or a great Chinese place.

Sistrkate, don't you secretly love dinner fails? I do. :-)
We're having Donatos. Mmmm...
