planning our preemie 1st bday. Cake questions?

Our 28 weeker will be turning one in two months!!! So we are starting to plan our sons 1st birthday party. He will be 9 months corrected at his birthday party, I was wondering what others did...real cake or something modified? We have been so blessed with his progress. He currently is eating stage 1 foods and prob will be at stage 2 by his bday.

    We did an ice cream sundae bar. I bought all kinds of candies, whipped creams, fruits and sauces and everyone made their own. DD had organic vanilla frozen yogurt. Everyone (except my MIL- grr) loved it and didn't make a big deal about not having a cake.

    We used a cake and frosting mix from Cherrybrook Kitchen (or something like that, I don't recall the name) that was all allergy friendly. DD was a 28 weeker as well and we just felt safer going with something like that.  We made her giant cupcake with that and had a normal cake, and other cupcakes made with the leftover allergy friendly stuff, for our guests so they could choose.  She LOVED it and dove right in.  Her face and body were covered and she was grinning from ear to ear.

    I should add, I don't know how much she actually ingested.  She had the best time just mushing it around.

    My baby is at stage 2 baby food right now. 

    I was thinking about doing a cake with a teddy bear theme for the adults.  And then I was going to get the mini chocolate and white cupcakes from Whole Foods Market for the kids and babies/toddlers who want the mini cupcakes.

Baby measured 9 weeks, still a heartbeat 12/23/09. Good NT Scan on 1/8/10, heartbeat 164. EDD 7/28/10. TEAM BLUE! Aidan Thomas born on May 26, 2010. Baby #2, BFP 11/27/11, EDD 6/5/12. TEAM PINK!     We did a straight up birthday cake from our local bakery.  Our little girl was 9 months adjusted as well but was a pretty good eater at that point.  She loved it and we got some great pics!

    My LO was 8.5 months adjusted at his first birthday and we chose to do an eggless cake. It was actually pretty good. He loved mushing the cake and frosting around, and eating it. We actually ended up taking his piece away after awhile because he had eaten so much - way more than we thought he'd actually get to his mouth! Have fun with it! You have lots to celebrate :)

    We went for it and let her have cake! She wasn't allowed to eat much (just because I don't allow much junk) but she was fine and we had fun!
