BH Question (visiting from 3rd tri)

Did any of you ladies have a lot more braxton hicks weeks before going into labor? I'm wondering if tons of BH are a sign baby will come early?  My background: I'm about 34 weeks and I have contractions every 5 mins and am not dehydrated and I'm on modified bed rest. These constant BH started when I was 29 weeks and my cervix shortened to 2cm. Tonight is my first night off of Procardia and vistaril. The meds have kept contractions to 4 an hr.  I'm a little nervous going off the medicine tonight but everything should be OK because I took the FFN test and it's neg. Thanks in advance! Congrats on your new babies.

Re: BH Question (visiting from 3rd tri)

  • The only thing between BH and true contractions is that BH won't shorten your cervix. If your cervix shortened at 29 weeks, you were in PTL. I can't really comment on what you should do since I never had PTL and you're under a doctor's care, but if I was having 4 contractions an hour, I'd probably head to L&D, and at the very least, I'd be calling the on-call doc. GL!

  • Thanks for your response :o) yes I was in PTL with a shortened cervix. My MD doesn't seem worried. He says if you go into labor, we won't stop it since you'r 34 weeks. He says come to the hospital if my contractions are really painful and or bloody show, or I loose my mucus plug.

If I have lots of my regular BH, I can stay home and take a warm bath to cope. Luckily they are just uncomfortable and not painful.

  • I really can't comment, because I'm not sure what BH feels like. I never really had them. I would definitely call your doctor.

  • My midwife thought I was having BH or had an infection that was causing my contractions, I knew it was something else. Went to the hospital for a FFN swab and turned out I was 2cm and 100% effaced. They couldn't do anything to stop the PTL and he was born within a day. Listen to your body!

  • I wouldn't trust a FFN, I've heard of too many people who thought they were safe and were not...

That said, three days after I went off procardia I had my son.Like PP said, I would give your doc a call if you are having them that close together. My DD was a 34 weeker and it was not a fun journey- I'm shocked they took you off the procardia so soon. GL and I hope you have a healthy and happy full term baby.

  • Thanks for your insight ladies :o) I'm still pregnant with my achy nonstop contractions. I hope I have a full timer too. One reason they took me off the medicine, was that it wasn't stopping my contractions anymore. MD said if there is a good reason baby wants to be born I should let it happen. Could I just have an irritable uterus?
  • I know everyone is different, but I noticed an increase in BH about a week before I had my son. He was born at 34 weeks, 1 day and it all started with my water breaking on me. I didn't have Pre-E, no gestational diabetes either. Hopefully though it won't be the same for you!
