OMG weight gain.

Yesterday I had an appointment with my endocrinologist, and when I stepped on the scale, I almost passed out! I gained 6 lbs. in 5 days!?! I know I haven't gained any in a month, but I haven't been eating any more than usual, so why the sudden burst in weight gain? I have an OB appointment tomorrow, along with all the blood work and such for pre-e, but now I'm terrified! Where did all this weight come from?!? Any one else have/had this?

Re: OMG weight gain.

  • Last week I literally put on 2lbs over night. And it's not like I had had a big meal or anything to make it jump that quickly.  And it certainly hasn't gone away.

  • Water weight, clothing, shoes.   That's what I tell myself!
  • Was one weigh-in in the morning and the second in the late afternoon?  Did you have a lot of salt? Eat a big meal?

My weight fluctuates day to day (yes - I am obsessive and weigh myself daily) so it could just be normal.  I'd definitely discuss it with your doctor, though.

Both appointments were at 9:30 in the morning. And I had 2 slices of toast and a bottle of water for breakfast both days (almost every day, actually). Talk about shock! I have this little problem number 1 on my list of questions for the OB tomorrow.

  • Between my 34 and 36 week appointments I gained 6 pounds.  Up to that point I had only gained 20 pounds total.  My doctor didn't say anything about it, but asked if I had "unquenchable thirst."  He didn't mention it beyond that.  I asked him to check out my swollen ankles and he said what I have is normal.  I don't know where the weight came from, but I'm hoping it's just going to baby and water.

  • I weigh myself every other morning buck naked before I eat (and have for the entire pregnancy to help myself).  The last five WIs have looked like this:

    • Monday +1
    • Wednesday -2
    • Friday +7
    • Sunday +1
    • Tuesday -6

I have totally given up caring at this point because really, none of it can be accurate?!

  • Between weeks 33 and 35 I had gained 5 lbs. My dr wasn't concerned because I have only gained 20 the whole pregnancy so far. But since then I have been watching what I am eating. I was shocked.

  • The same exact thing happened to me.  I have gained a lot of weight all pregnancybut these last 4 weeks I?ve been trying to be extra good so I don?t gainanymore weight.  So I was in shock inwhen I saw that  I gained 5 pounds inabout 5 days.  I just came back from thedoctor and she said that it was probably mostly water weight.  She could tell by looking at my legs that Ihad lots of water retention even though I wasn?t too swollen (based on thecolor of my legs).

So let's hope it really is all water weight for us.

  • lol - we weigh ourselves at my office... I am thinking about boycotting the weigh-in tomorrow...I don't want to know!
  • I agree, you're probably retaining water.  Also, my MW said that babies can have growth spurts in the womb, so you skate along fine for a couple of weeks and then bam, LO suddenly grows a lot seemingly overnight.  Another thing - a few days ago on one of my daily pregnancy update emails, I read that my blood volume would likely increase a lot this week, so that may have happened to you and added weight as well.

I weigh myself once or twice a week and that's it.  Any more than that would drive me crazy.  Try to drink a lot of water and eat low-simple-carb, high-nutrient foods like huge salads with tons of veggies and then some lean protein and/or complex carbs to fill you up.
