Preemies

Does your preemie have watery bowel movements? (Yep TMI)

I have Isla's first pedi appt tomorrow and I was wondering about her stools.

Sometimes they are soft and other times they are just watery. She will usually have a bowel movement every other day. She is taking all of her bottles and has a great appetite. Since we brought her home (Feb 22) she's gone from eating 2oz at a feeding to wanting 3-4oz. Her urine diapers are great but it's the watery poop that concerns me. Is there something we can do to help her have a more solid stool instead of watery?

Isla does grunt sometimes but we know that's due to her muscles not being strong enough because she's a preemie. Her grunting doesn't last long and once she's pooped she's ok. She can't stand being dirty and once she has been changed she's very happy. She doesn't have broken or irritated skin either.

Does you preemie have watery stools? Is this something they evenually grow out of? I plan on asking the pedi tomorrow but didn't know if any of you have dealt with this as well. TIA

  • Is she BF-ing or FF-ing? DD always had watery stools on BM. When we switched to FF-ing it swung completely in the other direction (lactose intolerance) then back to watery again (soy sensitivity) and then we finally got it worked out with a reduced lactose formula. Talk with your pedi, but I think their little digestive tracks are just more sensitive. DD is now able to tolerate milk and soy well- it was just a temporary thing.

  • Watery poop is normal for BF babies, so if you BF I wouldn't worry about it.

  • My DD has runny poop forever and we found out she had a milk protein intolerance. We switched formulas and while they aren't "formed" by any means, they are more like melting ice cream now and she stopped grunting so much.
