Switching MWs, Internal?

I just switched to a new practice. They want me to get an internal at my appoinment on Thursday because they've never seen me before. Is that necessary? Can you think of anything they'd be looking at besides my cervix? And do they really need to?

At my last appointment, I refused because I simply wasn't "prepared" for an internal. And they said they really wanted me to do it at my next appointment. I guess I don't get it, because if I was with my original practice they wouldn't be checking anything right now, so why is the new practice?

Re: Switching MWs, Internal?

  • I switched OBs at 22-ish weeks and they have never done an internal. I think it's funny that my OB will be delivering my baby and has never even seen my vag. Well, I guess she will for the group b strep test, but that's it. I see no reason why they need to do an internal just because you're a new patient... some bizarre "getting to know you" check? If you have no problems from your other OB and are transferring your records, I would refuse.

  • I'd refuse too unless they could give some valid reason...although I can't think of anything they'd need to check out.

Some practices are just big on internals.

This is what I was thinking! Like you need to see my vag to be my doctor?! lol. I'm going to ask what the point is. IDK what they're looking for. And I was planning on refusing internals all together, so I definitely don't want one if it's just because they wanna see how I'm looking. lol

  • I would also refuse - they don't need to see it! I would also ask how often they are planning on doing internals during labor- they may want to do them more often than you want!
  • My doc has done an internal at each appointment starting at 28 weeks to check for any change in the cervix.  I didn't know this wasn't standard...hmm...don't see any harm in it though.

Many people (including a lot of OBs/MWs) don't see them as necessary unless there is a problem and they are concerned about PTL. 28 weeks sounds crazy if you weren't having problems.
