Hi my ds just turned 2 last week,he says i would say about 100 words or more, also says some 2-3 word sentences.Well my older ds is 4.5 and has been receiving speech since he was 2 for no words at all.Now he has articulation problems, well his speech therapist thinks i should have my 2 yr old evaluated for the same problem.I think he talks fine, she thinks he is picking up on how our 4 yr old talks, but i think it's only a few sounds he can't say too well yet.She asked if other people besides family has heard him talk, but i told her no we usually don't get out much,.I read his speech is only supposed to be 50% understandable to a stranger, which i think it's more than that ,and don't they have to be severely delayed to receive therapy? He is going to the dr next week so i will bring it up then ,but just wanted to know what u ladies think,i know it doesn't hurt to have him evaluated but as of right now i don't think he would qualify until closer to 3.
Re: Speech ?
I would go with what your pedi tells you next week, your older son's speech therapist may be trying to be preventative but she could also be overreacting. What does your gut tell you?
What sounds does your toddler not say well so you can give examples to your pedi? There are so many phonetic combinations that are difficult for 2 - 2.5 yr olds and still considered normal in terms of development. My toddler has trouble with "sp" and "th" (for example) but I see improvement week to week and I always make sure I repeat the word back to him correctly.
I think it never hurts to get things checked out. I love my ped, but I didn't trust her opinion over a speech pathologist.
DS started EI for speech at 18months. He is 3.5 now and is receving articulation help through the preschool program. DD is almost 20 months old. At 9 months, she started receving EI for gross motor and some OT as well. At about 15 months, she still wasn't talking much. Since we had the family history and she was already in the system, we went ahead and started speech therapy with the same therapist that used to work with DS. At 20m, she is doing better than DS did at that age. She babbles and has a handful of words but she rarely initiates on her own.
At the end of the day, the sooner you start getting help, the faster they will catch up. If anything, you waste a couple hours to find out they are perfectly fine. If they need help, you are getting it for them as soon as possible.
