Parenting after 35

waking up early

Ada is waking up so early in the morning - this morning she was awake, chirping and saying "NO!" emphatically at 4:45 am. Her bedtime routine hasn't changed at all. She goes to bed around 7:30. I think that keeping her up any later than that would be most unpleasant. This started happening when Tim and I started getting up at 5:00 so that we could do some things before she woke. She can't hear us and we aren't bothering her. Now she is awake well before we are even stirring in our bed!

Any ideas?

Re: waking up early

  • I wish I had advice. Caroline wakes between 4:45 and 5:15, every day of the week. Like you, keeping her up later is not something that would be pleasant at all. What I would give to have 15 minutes alone in the morning before she summons me.

  • No ideas or advice. Mikey goes through phases of when he wakes up and it has nothing to do with bedtime or naps the day before. Right now we're lucky that it's 7-7:30, but it has been 5-ish. I'd just ride it out and hope that she decides to sleep later on her own.
  • If she's not crying, have you tried just leaving her and see if she goes back to sleep after a while? Fiona has gone through early waking phases as well, but is now back to 7-7:30.
  • Maybe she's preparing for daylight savings time? Wink

  • Adrian always wakes up around 6:30, no matter if he goes to bed at 8 or at 10! So obviously, we put him down earlier so we can get a break. Sometimes we're lucky if he sleeps til 7, but that's rare. And on the days he wakes up before 6:30, we try to leave him alone and see if he'll play in his crib for a while. If he's not sick he usually plays for about an hour before he gets bored and is ready for his morning bottle. Lately though, he starts calling for us as soon as he wakes, so we're SOL.

I think you just have to wait and see. Maybe put some stuffed animals (safe ones) in her crib so she can entertain herself?

This is what I was going to say. You are probably one of the few looking forward to DST.

  • DS woke up an hour early this morning, speaking of!

The irony, though, is that maybe putting her to bed earlier might help.  I know it seems weird, but many sleep guru's advocate this - the earlier to bed, the longer they sleep.

Another thing I've done w/ DS that has kind of worked (but not so much this week) is that he has a digital clock in his room.  I wrote beneath it "6:30" and told him "this is when you can get up (or when we'll come and get him)".  It actually worked for awhile - but now he seems to be testing it.

So, I may have to get stronger in my resolve and tell him firmly "mama will be in at 6:30 to get you" - even if he's awake the entire time.

  • I'd also try to not get her that early. Sarah sometimes is already awake when I wake at 7 but we haven't heard her on the monitor, she is just quietly playing in her crib. She usually needs half an hour to an hour before she is ready to get up, so I just leave her in her crib. When she starts getting more active - sitting or standing, talking more - I go and get her. Today I actually saw on the monitor at 6:30 that she was awake briefly but then she went back to sleep for another hour.
