3rd Trimester

Diaper size???

We are starting to get things ready a little bit for baby and I wanted to make sure I had a box or two of diapers stocked in the nursery. I just have a question on what size diapers to get???? The Newborn say for Newborn up to 10 pounds.....and then Size 1 for up to 14 pounds????

I am a first time mom so I am asking other mommy's out there if there is a brand they prefer or swear by and one that works the best while the belly button is healing???

Re: Diaper size???

  • The huggies newborn brand actually dip down around the belly button so they don't rub. The pampers swaddlers you have to roll down, but they are nice too. As an infant I was more concerned with brand name diapers and comfort for my LO, but now my toddler rocks the target brand diapers and I've never had a problem with them.

  • We LOVE Pampers...and always have.  The Pampers Swaddlers are great, and the NB size does have a cut for the belly button.  I like the Swaddlers Sensitive because they also have a line that changes colors when the diaper gets wet/dirty (great for DH!) One of my biggest reasons for choosing Pampers over Huggies is because they are much softer too.

ETA:  We prefer Pampers diapers (stayed with Swaddlers as long as possible before moving to the "crunchier" Cruisers.  I didn't like the Baby Dry very much.  BUT we prefer Huggies wipes!

    Allie ~ 01/26/09 ~ 7 lbs, 9 oz ~ 20.75 in. & Amelia ~ 03/16/11 ~ 8 lbs, 1 oz ~ 21 in.

  • We started DS on Pampers and Huggies, only to find that all of the Huggies that we put him in leaked (he was BF and had soft stools all the time).  We used NB size, Swaddlers, and they are dipped in the front for the belly button (which is only usually an issue for a week or so).

As PP stated we prefer Pampers diapers and Huggies wipes.  If I were you, I'd buy a pack of both and see how you like them, they fit every baby differently.

  • DD has been in pampers since day 1. And was in the newborn size for her first month.
  • Im a first time mom as well however Ive spoken with some experienced mothers who advise Pampers Sensitive or Huggies Naturals. Theyre soft, dip around the navel, and have indicators for when the diaper is soiled. I have Pampers Sensitive and Huggies Naturals I have at least 2 boxes of newborns and a whole rack one stage 1 diapers.

  • I bought a few packs of Huggies for the umbilical cord cut out, but I also got some pampers as gifts.  After LO is out of newborn sizes I plan on using Costco brand as long as they work for LO.  It holds poop, no need to be expensive lol.

Also, I have never bought a pack of diapers without a coupon so far.  We get a pack of coupons in the mail each week and without fail there are diaper coupons.  Also in my baby registry packet from BRU I got Huggies coupons in there.  Use them!  I also found that if I am buying them, wal-mart tends to be the cheapest.  I thought I did great at CVS one day after using a coupon and my extra care bucks, but then I saw that Wally World was still cheaper even after all of that (which really sucks because I HATE wal mart!)

  • I would recommend purchasing a small box of newborn size diapers and keeping the receipt.  Personally, I wouldn't even open them until you come home from the hospital, just in case you have an 8lb+ baby and end up going straight to size 1 diapers right away (actually we started with size 1 in the hospital - that was what they gave us - but ended up using up our newborn size when we got home just because we didn't want them to go to waste).  I would also recommend having at least a box or so of size 1 diapers on hand, because you will definitely use those.  I wouldn't invest too much until you decide which brand of diaper you like best, then you can stock up on that particular brand in the sizes that you need.

As far as brand, I prefer Pampers Swaddlers Sensitive for the first few months, but it really is just a personal preference and what ends up working for your baby.  Some say Huggies are better for boys and Pampers are better for girls, or vice versa, but in the end I think it is just a personal preference!

  • If you do choose to go with Pampers, keep an eye on LO's bottom. I work in a pediatric office and we have had babies come in with rashs so bad they looked like burns with peeling skin. This has been attributed to the new "Dry Max" that they're putting in their diapers.
  • Thanks everyone for the advise! I think I will get one packaged of Newborn and one package of Size 1 and that should be good to start and we can go from there. The comment of the Pampers having rash issues is alarming and is now in my head so I think I am going to start out with Huggies but we are for sure into saving money so somewhere down the line I will probably switch over to the Target brand too as long as there are no problems with them. Thanks again everyone!
  • Also any suggestions on other places to get coupons that would work at either Target or Wal-Mart besides the ones that I clip that come in the mail...????
  • You could always try coupons.com you type in what type of coupon you're looking for and then print them out. They have TONS of things you could use.
