Baby not sleeping in crib/pack and play/ anything flat....

DD is 5 weeks old and she will not sleep any kind of duration in her crib or her pack and play. She's perfectly content in her papasan (sp) chair, or carseat, or sometimes her swing but NEVER laying flat on anywhere. Anyone else go through this? I'm a little concerned, I don't want to have a problem transitioning her out of our room into her crib. I've tried putting her down in there during the day and a few times at night and even in her pack and play in our room many times and she'll sleepy MAYBE tops 1 hour if we're lucky. Her legs get to kicking, her arms will start to flail and she's awake! She goes anywhere from 3-4 hours in her chair, on mine or DH's chest, in bed next to me, pretty much anywhere thats not flat. Anyone have any ideas, or gone through this? TIA!

  • Ditto but I think that is due to his reflux and us having to prop him because of it.

If her legs and arms flailing wake her up have you thought about swaddling, even if it is for a nap?

  • My LO will only lay flat if: 1. she's swaddled, 2. she's already asleep, and 3. there's a rolled up receiving blanket behind her back so she's not flat on her back- more like laying almost on her side.

But really, there's no need to worry about this at this point. All of our babies are so young still this really isn't an issue. There will be a point in which our babies don't need to be swaddled, or rocked to sleep,  or sat up to sleep. My LO needs to be tightly swaddled and then put in the swing when she's fully asleep already. And then it needs to be on. But, sleep is sleep no matter how you come across it. Really, my other daughter needed to be rocked, swaddled, and such until she was 4 months old and the need just went away. She would sleep in her jammies only, on her back, and I only had to put her down while sleepy but not asleep.

Life gets easier! This is a stage that won't last forever.

  • We wrap LO up in a Halo sleep sack swaddle, and it keeps him from flailing & waking himself up. Also, maybe you could try propping up the mattress in the crib/bassinet with a book or blanket if possible.

  • I could have written this exact post. DD will only sleep for about an hour in her PNP in her back. Right now she sleeps for naps and overnight either in my arms, on my chest or in her bouncer. It's definitely not ideal but we keep trying the PNP hoping that this is just a phase and she will get over it.

  • My LO is the same way...I try to put her down in her crib after she is good and asleep...one time she stayed there for 2 hours, otherwise she is up within 15 minutes.  I do this swaddled, it doesn't seem to make any difference. I figure she will grow out of it at some point...and I am thrilled when I can get her to sleep in the swing or carseat because that means I am not stuck holding her (I do love holding her, don't get me wrong...but I also love showering and using the bathroom!!)

  • What a relief! I'm so glad I'm not the only one!  I did google it after I posted and found all the same info. I guess I'm just going off of DS who really could've been in his crib from day one. Every baby is different though! I decided yesterday I'm not going to stress over it and go with she'll grow out of it ;) Thanks for the replies girls!

  • My baby is the same way.  She naps on my chest or sometimes in the boppy or sometimes in her swing.  She has slept a grand total of 1 time in her bassinet.  Every night she sleeps with us in our bed, and is a really good sleeper!  Last night she slept 4.5 hours in a row!  I figure whatever works right now.  Oh, and she hates her swaddle so that little trick isn't an option for us even though I have about 500 velcro swaddles and swaddling blankets.

  • Welcome to the 4th trimester! =)  Baby needs to sleep in the place s/he sleeps best for now.  As for transitions, babies are very adaptable and their needs change as they age, so don't worry about baby sleeping in the swing, car seat, with you, etc., for now as long as appropriate safety precautionshave been taken.
