The first couple months was some cramping but nothing serious at all. And I'm not even sure it was around the time I ovulated. It was just general cramping every couple days or so.
BUT- since= amazing. And you don't get your period. I've had mine in since November.
I guess in am in the 10% that still get their period. AND to make it worse, it comes like every 23 days! I've had it in since January 2009...so 2 years and my OB said that I wouldn't have a period either, no such luck.
It is awesome that it is like 99.999% effective. I don't even think about it. Every now and then, I check to see if the "strings" are there. They don't "poke" dh either, he doesn't even feel it in there.
I never had any issues with it really. No cramping or anything. I am maybe a bit more moody/crabby/bitchy around "that time of the month" which happens more often now, but that is about it. It may be other factors too.
Another POSSIBLE side effect is that about 6-8 months after insertion I started getting these huge cystic zits on my face. It was disgusting. I'm 30+ and getting zits. I could go on, but I'll spare the details. I put up with it for a while, but they would leave such scars, so I started using Proactive and since, I haven't had any issues.
I say get it! It's BC for 5 years. Who can complain. Our insurance DID NOT cover it, so it was a bit pricy to pay out of pocket, all at once, but if you add up all the $$ you pay for perscriptions for birth control, tampons, pads, etc... It is almost a wash over 5 years.
When mine is up we are going to do Essure. The permanant BC. We are done too.
I have had it since July. I am moderately happy with it. I only had my period twice so far on it but I have gotten an ovarian cyst and I am dealing with that now. I am VERY prone to cysts and get them even on birth control pills so I am not a common case. I also "lost" the strings to mine. They got up into my uterus and do not come out through the cervix anymore. It is still in place and nothing to worry about. I just wanted to give you another point of view. Overall I would recommend it but I would ask a lot of questions first.
I had mine for a year and didn't get any periods. It did hurt a bit going in and was crampy for at least a month. I almost had it taken out but then the cramping went away finally and it was great after that. My insurance covered it so it was a $50 co pay and well worth it. My old pills were almost that much per month!! I've heard pretty bad things about the Paragard and most ppl with that have really heavy periods.

I got mine in November, it was a pretty painful/scary experience for me but from others Ive heard its fine. I had 1 month of slight bleeding but not much. Since then I have maybe 1-3 days of break-through bleeding that barely needs a tampon. I never worry about getting pg, no cramps -- I LOVE IT! And I plan to have more children and have no worries about getting it taken out at that time and getting another afterwards.

I don't have Mirena but I have Paragard so I thought I'd respond from that perspective. Insertion was pretty painful (and I was 8 weeks postpartum so labor pain was fresh in my mind and I thought this was worse) and I was crampy for a day or so but Ibuprofen took care of it. Since then I have had no problems at all but I EBF and have not had AF yet. I didn't with DD1 until after I weaned at 13 months so I'm going to see how it is after that. I want a 3rd child anyways so if I'm miserable once AF returns, I may have it removed and let nature take it's course!

If insurance won't cover it for Birth Control have them prescribe it for heavy, painful periods. That is what my OB did after they said they wouldn't initially cover it and they paid it all but the copay.
I've had it fro 3 years now and LOVE it! I had a ton of spotting at first (for like 4 straight weeks) but then nothing for a few months. I got two regular periods and then they stopped completely. I love the look I get when I go to the doctor and they ask when my last period was and I say August 2008!
Mine was very painful going in but only mild cramping for a few days after that. Had normal periods for 9 months then they stopped. I would do it again any day. Insurance didnt cover it so we paid 600 out of pocket for it.
My friend got one a year ago. When they went to check on it, it was gone! It pierced through her uterus and they said it is better to leave it in her body floating around. This scared me off.
I got mine in Dec. 09. I hated it for the first 2 months - unpredictable bleeding hell. Decided to stick it out and it's been good. I still get a little spotting once a month but no cramps and I just use a liner, no pads or tampons.
Stay at home mom to a house of boys: two amazing stepsons, 12 and 9, and our 4 year old.

I still get mine most every month but it is way lighter and I don't really get crampy like I did before.
