Trouble TTC

Giving up for lent?

Let me start this by saying, I'm not catholic...but I'm married to one.  I just saw my SIL post her "goodbye" on facebook as she is giving it up for Lent tomorrow.  My DH is giving up smoking (he actually has not had one since 6:30am today because he didn't want to buy another pack - go DH!)

Just kind of curious what others are giving up as I am giving some consideration to giving up caffine in honor of our upcoming first IUI.

  • I'm not giving anything up, but I'm adding something in.  There is no excuse why my house isn't immaculate at all times since I'm a SAHW.  I mean, it's clean, but not clean enough for what it should be.  So, I'm going to work on cleaning everyday, and I'm going to work on organizing things like the closets and the office.  I'm making my list of things that I want to accomplish over the next 40 days tonight.

I figured that giving anything up at this point would just do nothing but piss me off and make me even more irritable.  I know that it's about it being a sacrifice, but I'm using this time to focus on being a better wife to my husband.  And he definitely deserves that.

  • That's very touching, sometimes I think IF is harder for our husbands than us, with all the b!tchiness and tears.

I am not a practicing Catholic anymore, but I usually try to give up or do something extra during this time.

I am going to give up negative thoughts. It's not helping my journey and I am going to focus on thinking as positive as I possibly can.

  • I'm giving up chocolate and pop.  DH is giving up coffee.  We're going to be two irritable people :)
  • We're adding in studying together & I think watching what we eat.  I'm kinda of getting suckered into it- but I think DH really needs help so I'll go along with the program he's using (he's not big but he eats like a goldfish- and would eat all of the food he could find daily and hunts for stuff I hide rather than exercising restraint).  Limiting my TV time too- my biggest vise right now is being lazy.

  • It seems like a lot of people use it more for self discipline or self improvement, and that's not really the point.  I mean, if you give up junk food or whatever, what does that teach you about the meaning of Lent?  Lent is in remembrance of Jesus' suffering in the desert, and to reflect on that suffering and what it teaches us.

In the last few years, the Catholic Church has leaned way more toward what you can do to better the world (as cheesy and broad as that sounds) rather than what you can sacrifice for yourself.  Like if you give up coffee or whatever, donate the money you would have spent on it to a worthy charity.  Or volunteer at a soup kitchen every week or something.

I hope this doesn't sound too judgy...maybe other religions have a different perception of Lent.  This is just always what I've believed as a Catholic.

  • I am giving up all processed sugars (I do not count fruit as bad sugar so I will still eat fruit). I am trying to stick to a meat, vegs, and fruit diet. Lent will give me the incentitive to stick with it. I really do love this time of year, it makes me take my life more seriously. I wish I would do this more all year long.
