Childcare question

Any advice on how to find part-time chilcare?  A friend of ours has watched our children for two and a half years, but she'll be going back to work soon, so we're now searching for someone new.  We only need someone 2 days a week, which I'm thinking might make our search trickier.  Also, our son will be starting preschool next year....so we might need someone to pick him up on one of those days.  Has anyone used sittercity.com or care.com?  If so, I'd love to hear your thoughts.  Or any other advice is GREATLY appreciated too.  Thanks!

Re: Childcare question

  • I found a great weekend sitter on sittercity, but it did take some effort and weeding through potential sitters to find our current sitter.

  • I don't really have any good advice or tips, just wanted to say that it's possible just  not as common. Our DCP only had part time spots available. We found her via Craig's List (and then checked her out through the MD dcp licensing sites and whatnot).
    The DC Nest. Winers welcome.

  • SitterCity.com and Care.com are great.  Our part time morning nanny (she'll be coming 3 days a week for 3hrs a day) we found on Care and our occasional afternoon sitter (for 1-2hrs a day in the afternoons as needed) on SitterCity.  It is possible to find part time care!

  • Have you considered a childcare center 2 days a week? Many offer 2 and 3 day a week programs. And most of the good schools are actually considered full-day preschool so you wouldn't have to send your child to a separate school or worry about arranging drop-off/pick-up. It's probably more expensive than a sitter/nanny but some of the places out there are really great. Might be worth looking into. Good Luck!

  • LOVE Sittercity. I can post in the morning that I need a sitter that night, and get someone pretty good. A lot of the really good people already have background checks and references on the site.

Also, I am impressed with the upstanding staff. I had one potential nanny who got nasty with me after I emailed her a "Not interested, thanks" in response to her app. When I forwarded the email chain to Sittercity, and they banned her immediately. They also emailed anyone who had any sort of contact with her to alert them of a potential problem.
