So we left town Thursday evening (for an OOT wedding) and we believe that sometime Friday/Saturday the sewer backed up in our basement. We didn't return home until last night to find that it had happened. Thankfully the water isn't standing and it didn't reach a high level, but it is a huge effing mess. Anything touching the floor is a loss. It was the kids playroom, our storage area, laundry area and a half bath. I'm so overwhelmed and what we thought was just flood water, we found out is actually sewage! I'm freaking out about contamination and all of the airborne crap since it had three days to set. I'm worried about Cameron especially and it will be Friday before it is all cleaned up. We pitched so many of Alex's toys already and any clothes we had in the laundry room are a complete loss...including my entire stash of CDs. I had just washed them and they were out drying since we did disposables for our trip. The only sentimental thing I lost was a handmade and hand painted nativity set from my grandmother. We had converted 98% of everything into plastic storage bins instead of cardboard thankfully. They say a lot of the other stuff can be sprayed like DS's train table, table/chairs, motor scooter but I'm just ready to pitch it all.
Silver lining---we were going to stay an extra day in Chicago and play but didn't and I'm so glad because we saved $$$ and caught this mess earlier. Oh, and we'll get a new basement that will get rid of our hideous 1972 interior designs.
