Lent

Being catholic I have been thinking about what I am going to give up for lent.  I have been terrible about eating fast food during this pregnancy.  I just can't help myself.  Now that I am on bedrest I think that it might just be the perfect thing to give up.  I know it's going to be a whole lot easier to gain weight while sitting on my butt.

Anyone else giving something up for lent?

  • You don't always have to give something up for Lent,, I know a lot of people who try to add a positive habit to their life such as reading scripture every day.  Just a thougth.

  • I am going to try to make it to church every week. Also we will give up a meal a week and donate the amount we would have spent to the church pantry.

  • I'm more of a "add something good" person, so we'll be adding Wednesday night worship services, and I'll probably read a devotional daily. I've given up enough this year being pg.

  • I've gotten into the habit of eating dessert several times per day (and occasionally in place of a meal--horrible, I know), so for lent, I'm giving up excessive desserts and limiting myself to one per day.  I considered giving up a particular category of dessert like chocolate or ice cream, but I figured I would just end up eating more of other desserts.

  • I think I'm going to give up soda (caffeine-free coke has been my happy place lol)

  • I'm giving up facebook.  We are also going to try and go to the weekly stations of the cross.
  • Being that I've been eating ice cream every night, I'm going to give up ice cream for Lent this year.  That means DH is going to have to take me to DQ Q tonight for a snickers blizzard.

  • I'm giving up buying wants.  Only needs and gifts.  I made a calendar to help teach DS about Lent and the importance of both sacrificing and doing good deeds and we're doing the jellybean jar from www.catholicmom.com.  I don't think giving up something easy is in the true spirit of Lent.  I mean, sure, I could "give up" something that I'm already avoiding, but how is that making me reflect on the gravity of the Passion?

Maybe you could do something like pray the rosary each day.  It wouldn't require extra physical effort and, if prayed with purpose, can help eat up some of your boring bedrest time.  You might even try learning some different ways to do it.  I was taught a German way that inserts a meditative phrase into each Hail, Mary (... of thy womb, Jesus, who ______).  There's also the Rosary of the Seven Sorrows.

  • Instead of giving something up, I am going to try and go to church every Sunday/Say Grace at every meal. These are habits I would like to keep up after LO is here, and I figure this is a good time to practice.

  • I gave up booze too.  Pregnancy made it easy.  :-)

A couple years back I tried to give up swearing.  That didn't last long...  Last year I decided to commit to eating at least one piece of fresh fruit every day, instead of snacking on something else.  It worked out pretty well.
