Are the cheaper breastpumps worth it?

I've been using my sister-in-law's old Medela pump for both DS #1 and DS #2 (she tried to pump and gave up after a week or so).  I only worked sporadically with DS#1 but I'm going back to work next month part time and I don't think it's going to hold up.  It just sounds like it could die at any minute.  I don't want to invest in a brand-new expensive pump for such a short time (I'm a teacher and will only work April and May, then I'm taking next year off).

I'm wondering if the cheaper breastpumps like the Lansinoh Affinity or The First Years miPump are any good?  I'm sure there's a difference between these and the nicer ones, but I'm wondering if someone has some input as to whether or not they can handle a couple months of hard work, then just be used sporadically again.  Anyone have any input on either of these?

 TIA!

  • I am not sure how it would hold up to the intense time while you are teaching, but I have a miPump that actually works ok. When I return to work, LO goes with me, so I bought a cheap pump knowing that I would only need it to build a stash for nights out and such. Granted, I have an oversupply, but I get 4oz from both sides easily when I do pump.

  • I have a Lanisnoh - I worked 20hrs/week and was able to pump and EBF DS quite well.  I went back to work at 3 months PP and weaned DS in his 10th month.  The pump did great - I needed to replace tubes/valves once during that time but it came with 2 extra sets so there was no extra cost.  It's a closed system which was the biggest selling point - so when I was done BFing DS, I sterilized and stored everything and have already gotten it out and used it this time around.  I would highly recommend the Lanisnoh brand!

  • I have an Eenflo double electric pump that I paid aobut $70 for it. It pumps well and is apiece of cake to clean, but what I don;t care for is that it is kind of loud and there is nothing to hold them on if you need to massage a duct. Otherwise you need to use one at a time, but it doesn't take that long to pump at all. I can pump both sides in about 15-20mins.

  • I have the Playtex dual electric pump and it works great.

  • I've been using the Evenflo hand pump, and it has been great.  It's only 23 bucks, and surprisingly I'm not pumping forever to get a good return like I thought I'd have to.  I don't pump all the time, but I think it could easily handle it if i did.

  • Have you thought about just renting one instead of making a purchase? The hospital grade pumps are awesome and you would have minimal expense.
