I didn't know: LO's eye color

I just got my Fit Pregnancy weekly update and it said that LO's "eyes are fully formed and blue in color (her eventual eye color will show itself a few months after birth)." WHAT?! I didn't know that!! DH and I have been trying to guess at what color she will have- blue like DH or deep brown like me. According to google, it looks like I should be expecting a blueish or grey to start and then give it a while. Is that fairly accurate? I found this interesting on the WTEWYE website.

"African-American, Hispanic, and Asian babies are almost always born with dark eyes that stay dark. But Caucasian babies are usually born with dark blue or even slate-gray eyes that may change several times before a baby?s first birthday."

And here I was thinking we were going to have a fun time just watching to see what color her hair eventually became. (DH and I both had revolving hair colors as babies)

  • Thats so interesting. We are having a half asian, half white baby, so we are really excited to see which traits she takes from each of us.

  • Yes, I've know this for years (from family members babies) that any white baby will have a very dark blue or dark grey eyes for about 6 months to a year.

  • I've known of several babies born with brown eyes. Two of my nieces were born with brown eyes. One of my very good friends as well. I'm just saying.

    ETA: we're all caucasian.

  • yep.  and a lot of times (unless it's brown) the baby's eye color can "change" up until 6 months old!

this is a fun "test" to take showing what the chances are of the color of your baby's eyes!  https://museum.thetech.org/ugenetics/eyeCalc/eyecalculator.html

crazy that brown is sooo dominate!  (dh and all his side are wayy blue...and my side of the fam is all all brown).  so this little girl only has a 13% chance at being something other than BROWN!

Fun test but there are no choices for grey (my moms eye color) or hazel (mine)...Either way I'm fully expecting a brown eyed baby considering mine are hazel and my DH is hispanic/white with brown eyes.

  • they say the reason baby's eyes are dark blue when they are born is because there is no light in the womb. my dh and his family have dark brown eyes, and my family and I have blue eyes. our girls have greenish hazel eyes, i am very curious to see what color eyes this baby will have.

  • The eyes of every child born in my family (my parents, their siblings, me, cousins, other kids) have been brown.

DH was adopted, we have no idea what his family history looks like, but when he was adopted at 3 weeks, his eyes were dark brown.

We're expecting a brown eyed baby.

  • I read that a couple of months ago because my husband and I are in the same boat. He's Scotch/Irish/Welsh with blue eyes, I'm full blooded Italian with black brown eyes.

I checked a genetics website and it really said that unless you know if you've got dominant or recessive brown, there's no telling for sure.

There are some cute websites that give guesses, but they're probably about as accurate as those silly baby gender estimate websites.

    Us too!

But I'd bet my money on brown Smile  Also, hair is an interesting thing too...DS's has always been brown but it's much lighter than mine {which is basically black} and his is a medium-brown but I know of another couple and their DS was born with blonde hair but at about 1.5 yrs it's turning to a light brown.

  • this is absolutely true. Most Caucasian babies are born with grey-blue eyes. The pigment usually establishes itself by 3-4 months - makes for a fun guessing game!
  • DS1 was born with beautiful blue eyes.  DH has blue eyes, so I was hoping they would stay blue (mine are brown).  Just before his first birthday, they really started to change and are now a really light brown, and sometimes a little greenish in certain lights.  It's crazy how that works!

  • My dad is Hispanic (hazel eyes) and my mom is white (brown eyes), I came out with brown and they stayed brown, but my half siblings from my dad and step-mom (both Hispanic) both were born with blue eyes that turned hazel.

I have brown eyes, and DH has blue, we're hoping for her to have daddy's eyes.

    So fun!  Thanks for sharing!

  • My DD1 is the spitting image of me. She is blonde and blue, like me. DH is dark brown hair and hazel eyes. She has been blonde/blue from day one. Very curious what DD2 will be!

  • Our daughter is half white and half black. All of my immediate family has light eyes (blue or blue-ish green) and all of my husband's immediate family has brown. However, my husband's mother is also of mixed race and her mother is of Scottish descent and has blue eyes. I took the fun little quiz above and it said we have a 13% chance of our kids having blue or green eyes and a 72% chance of them having brown eyes. Our daughter was born with dark blue eyes that got progressively lighter. Now they are more blue than mine (she's 4)! We are so curious as to what our son will be born with...it's the one thing we keep saying we can't wait to find out about his appearance. I had a dream he was born with brown eyes, so we'll see!
  • Yup, eye color definitely changes. I am Hispanic (Spanish, Mexican and Filipino) and DH is Caucasian. My eyes are brown and DH's are brown with a lot of green.
DD was born with blue eyes and after about 6 months or so they turned brown. Though they are DH's brown, not mine.

  • This was definitely true for me...I was born with blue eyes that turned green while I was young and then eventually turned a hazel-green combo that has been described as gold...and that was much later on.  I think I was in high school.

  • Both me and my sister were born with blue eyes and we both have brown eyes now.  Of course my youngest sister's stayed blue.

There can be surprises.  My mom and dad both have brown eyes and their first two daughters had brown.  Lo and behold my youngest sister with bright blue eyes that never changed.

  • I just checked out that site. Very neat. My husband is aboriginal with brown eyes but his grandfather had grey eyes so we hope that might up our chances. I have blue eyes and my whole family is light eyed (dad is blue, mom green, sister green, sister hazel). We hope that my husband may just have that recessive light eye in there somewhere and we will end up with a blue eyed baby. So far both our boys have very very dark brown eyes (to the point where you can't distinguish iris from pupil).
  • I'm pretty sure our kid is going to have blue eyes given that DH, myself, and both sets of parents all have blue eyes.        I'm most curious about what color hair the baby will have.

  • Yup.  DS had gray eyes for the longest time.  They finally turned hazel, but I can't remember how old he was.
