TTC After a Loss 6 Months+

Back from RE with a plan

So they're going to run the RPL panel and check for antifosfolipid. She mentioned trying IVF again and we said we'd like to wait until the summer time and she was fine with that. Then she asked about my cycles and I said they were longer so she suggested we try femara to induce an earlier ovulation and hopefully prevent the effect of late ovulation leading to another miscarriage. And if the femara is too expensive she said I could do the clomid again but the clomid made me crazy so we'll see. She also said anytime I know I ovulated and had relations at the appropriate time we should test 14 days later and if I got to the office before 10, they'd run a beta for me (Sweet! Good to know!) and she gave me a script for betas and progesterone check whenever I feel the need if I can't get to the office. So our plan is trying on our own with femara and no monitoring followed by IVF in July. I'm cool with it. She also said if I was over 35 and said I wanted to wait 5 months she would say no but since I'm only 31, 5 months won't make much of a difference.

Now I have to price out femara- anyone know a good place to get it? Or how much it costs?

Re: Back from RE with a plan

  • Sounds like a good plan, not sure about the price of femara.

  • Glad you have a plan figured out.  I never took Femara, but Freedom Pharmacy tends to have good prices so check them out. Good luck Amy!

  • I had a copay on Femara, so I can't help you there.  I don't wish to be a debbie downer, because you know I support you and want you to succeed, but are you sure about femara with no monitoring?  I didn't think that was recommended, but of course your RE knows what's right for you.  I wish you the best and hope you won't need to worry about IVF this summer.

No worries, I enjoy the flip side. They want to do monitoring to ensure there aren't too many follies or for cysts and to find out when to trigger. Well, we're skipping the trigger and just letting my body O on it's own. And I use the CBEFM so I will know when I will O. As for too many follies- that doesn't really seem to be an issue as we've had as many as 10 when we did IUI's and nothing and they put 3 blasts back in for my IVF and I only had one implant enough to make a chemical pregnancy.

  • That sounds like a good plan.  I am really glad you can wait until summer to do IVF again - it will be easier I am sure.

Sorry I don't know anything abou the cost of femara.  But, check out the link below.  I think you can get some pills for free.  A girl I know got 10 pills.  She printed the form and had her RE fill it out and then took it to a pharmacy (I guess you can go to any one) and they filled it for free.  Not sure why her RE didn't fill it out for 30 (I guess that is like 3 months worth), but maybe yours would.

Good luck hun!!  Maybe you won't need that IVF!!

  • I'm so glad you have a plan!  Femara wasn't bad at all....about $18 after insurance (they covered it b/c it's an approved breast cancer drug).  And while I'm not sure it's worked for us yet, it definitely helped with late O.  I usually O between CD17-26.  I went on CD13 & had a mature follie ready to trigger.  I was in shock.  I've never O'd that early since I can remember.  Keep us posted!!

  • Oh & side effects of Femara are NOTHING compared to Clomid.  It was magical compared to the hell of the 3 Clomid cycles.

  • Femara is pretty cheap.

I have insurance coverage, so it was a $10 co pay, but even out of pocket, I'd be surprised if it cost more than $100. Also, each time I did it, I took 2-2.5mg pills a day for 5 days, so you'll need 10 pills a month/cycle.

Side note: it's a breast cancer drug, so if you have any drug coverage with your insurance...it is probably covered since it isn't a "true" IF med. Good luck!!

  • Sounds like a good plan to me, and I hope it works.  Is Femera injectables?  I'll have to see if I have tried it.  I'm also trying to get an earlier ovulation to hopefully get pg and not miscarry with.  The Clomid stopped working for me.

Femara is a pill. It's actually a breast cancer drug- it causes decreased estrogen but then because it's decreased for 5 days, your brain then thinks it has to make more and then your body makes "extra". It doesn't stay in your system as long so it doesn't have as nasty of side effects either. Plus my insurance covered it.

I don't think I've tried it.  I should ask my RE.  Thanks!  And sorry, I didn't mean to hijack your thread. I hope the Femara works for you!

  • Sounds like a good plan! I had the RPL panel in November after my chemical. It's a lot of blood, be warned, but it was okay. I hope you get a clean bill or, if anything's wrong, it's fixable.
