Natural Birth

GBS+ Mamas

Once again I'm GBS+; I don't have an issue with the antibiotics during labor but I am a tad worried about the increased risk of thrush as a result.  No one brought it up to me last time and fortunately we never had an issue with thrush but you never know!

Anyway, I know probiotics are frequently recommended for preventing thrush when on antibiotics.  I'm currently taking a probiotic supplement once a day which has done wonders for my pregnancy induced digestive issues.  Just curious as to how others have used probiotics prior to labor as a "thrush guard" - any particular type I should be looking for?  Should I be taking them multiple times a day?

Any insight is welcome ;-)

Re: GBS+ Mamas

  • My MW particuarly recommends the L. reuteri and L. rhamnosis (spellings???) probiotics for helping to prevent vaginal yeast infections... not sure if they would be effective against oral/breast thrush, but it's worth a shot!

  • I am GBS+ and have been reading about this also. Apparently a broad spectrum probiotic is great to take for this and just good for you in general. Also eating lots of yogurt and ingesting lots of vitamin C.

  • Interesting, I never thought of that.  I didn't take anything during the birth, it was one dose of antibiotic, I guess the thought never crossed my mind.  When I was on antibiotics for mastitis I took a probiotic every time I had to take a dose, so 3-4x a day depending on the antibiotic (I had lots of mastitis).  I also used Monistat cream preemptively on my nipples, but at that point I'd had thrush already and was paranoid about it coming back since it took almost 2 months to get rid of.
