Effaced? "Stations"?

What exactly does effaced mean? How soft your cervix is, right? I was 30% last week and was 60% today (as well as 1cm dilated!!) and the OB seemed semi-shocked. My baby is also in the -2 'station'... What the heck does that mean? I totally should've asked at my OB appt but, yeah, I was too dumb to (obviously).

Re: Effaced? "Stations"?

  • Effaced is how short your cervix is and stations are how high or low the baby is.  I think of dilation & effacement like a sock -- effaced is like when you scruch a sock down to get it on your toes and dilation is how wide you stretch the sock open to get it on your toes.  Hope that helps!

  • I *believe* that effaced refers to how thinned out your cervix is. Stations refer to the baby's head position relative to your pelvic opening. -3, for example, is very high, and not engaged. -2 means your baby is starting to come down, but is still pretty high. It also has nothing to do with the baby "dropping." +3 is that the baby's head is basically starting to exit your vag. Here's a picture I found that helps illustrate.

  • According to my book, you can be 100% effaced, at 10 cm dilated and still be at a -2 station. Also, according to my book, most of the time they will have you wait until the baby has gone to a +2 or +3 before you start pushing.

  • Oh Lord, the poor baby's head! That picture makes me feel so bad for my baby's skull bouncing on my boney hips. But the sock description helps a ton, thanks!!
