3rd Trimester

The happiest baby on the block....

I got this book today at Borders because A. It was on sale due to their impending closure B. because everyone recommends it and C. I wanted a different view than the other book I'm reading "The Baby Book" (sears)

So I've only made it to page 8 in this book and maybe a person who's baby has yet to be born and refuses to come out should be reading about how he thinks there should be a 4th trimester. I kinda want to stab him in the eye Stick out tongue

LOL

Re: The happiest baby on the block....

  • We got this book at our shower by a friend that swears by it. I watched the dvd from Netflix twice. I really should start reading the book, huh?
  • Loading the player...
  • I found this book at the local thrift store so I got it for a whole $1. Woohoo. I think it goes over the same thing over & over again. I heard the DVD is better. I dunno.
  • It works! i don't know how but it does.... I have read the book and seen the dvd. You can skip the book and jujst watch the dvd. I've seen it work with 4 different new borns in the last 6 months.
  • There is a DVD?!?!?!?! Party!!!

::quickly scans netflix and cheers in delight that it's available::

Who wants to read when you could just watch the DVD Big Smile

  • I'm in the middle of reading the book right now.

I saw some clips of the DVD and it was like he was the Baby Whisperer!  I waiting for that in the mail.

But if I have a fussy or colicky baby...I will definitely try his techniques.

  • I found this book to be super helpful - I think is the one with the Sway, Swaddle, Shhh, S??, and S??? - I obviously need to read it again... I would def recommend it.

  • I HIGHLY recommend this book, although I also highly recommend reading it once you have your baby and can actually put the techniques to  use.  It's a life saver.

  • Ladies- make sure your DH watches the DVD/reads the book also. It's a huge help to a lot of men who feel pretty useless with LOs. It gives them techniques they can turn to. It also helps (if you both agree with his stance on newborns and the fourth trimester) to get you both on a similar parenting page.

I'm so glad both DH and I read this book and read it early- it was particularly helpful with a preemie at home who definitely needed an "extra trimester".

  • We skipped the book and went straight to the DVD - seeing the techniques done makes it easy to remember them.  I want every tool I can get in my arsenal if we have a fussy newborn and think this was a great start!

So glad I'm not the only one who had that reaction! I personally like Sears better. It just seems to me like if there were supposed to be a 4th "tri"mester... um... there would be.

  • I actually agree that it is a great point and makes sense when you look at other animals
  • The author actually says not to read his book and watch the DVD instead LOL
  • DVD is much better than the book!
  • we watched the DVD as part of our child birth classes. nurse who taught has used the 5S's on her 5 kids and she says it does work.

I think the point was that in nature, many babies are walking or at least able to somewhat take care of themselves. Foals, calves, fawns, etc.  Of course, those are all herbivores and prey animals, so primates, cats, canines, etc. are a little different.

However, humans' brains are so large that we have to come out earlier than we really should. It's not that the author thinks that we should somehow make babies stay in longer. He's just saying that developmentally they might not have all of the coping skills that would be ideal for them to have. So we should recreate the uterine environment so they're more comfortable, at least for 3 months or so.

    Exactly.

Ditto!  I think the book makes a whole lot more sense after you have had the baby.  Don't get me wrong, reading in advance is good, but you don't really understand until they are actually here...or at least, I didn't.  Once your baby hits 3 months, they have more of a personality, routine, etc.  Then by 4 months you hit the wakeful period.  When I look back to my time with DD#1, I spent most of the first 3 months of her life recreating the womb with swaddle blankets, pacifiers, white noise, heartbeat bears, etc.  I guess I'm just a crazy believer that there really is a 4th "tri"mester.
