Your dentist or seperate Ped. dentist?

What do you take LO to?

DD is tough and brave.  When we take the babies in for shots, she asks to get a shot to show them it's not scary.  She has no fears except the dentist!!  She has been with DH and me a total of 6 times over the last 18 months and has FREAKED out every time.  Even if she is seated away from the equipment.  We tell make believe stories to prepare her, but she'll simply tell me she's proud of me for being brave at the dentist but she doesn't like him and won't let him look in her mouth!

Re: Your dentist or seperate Ped. dentist?

  • E goes to a pedi dentist mainly because DH and I go to different dentist and neither one of them are really specialized in children E's age. Her dentist has toys and tvs and games to entertain her and spaces that she can explore. They are only kids so they are used to kids exploring and wandering, which I love.

  • Just make sure that the pediatric dentist is covered under your policy - I've run onto that problem trying to find a dentist for DD with our insurance.

  • I've taken DD to my dentist once (we're due for another visit in a couple of months) and she did fine. We first let her see what the dentist was doing with me, then we sat her in my lap to be looked at. She turned away from the dentist for a while, then after a while the dentist brought out a sparkly toothbrush and Sasha opened her mouth wide and let her take a look. I'd try taking your DD to the pedi dentist if she seems to be scared of yours.

  • DD will go to my regular dentist.

  • DD goes to a pediatric dentist because pediatrician recommended the place. It is very kid friendly and they are going with DD even though she hates to open her mouth and cries when they get it open etc. THey are awesome with her!

  • DS has an appt with my dentist in a few weeks.  The dentist has 5 kids so I am guessing he is pretty good with them.  Plus I love him.

  • I took him to a pediatric dentist. However, he threw such a fit when it was time to go home because they have a full Thomas the tank table with trains, he nearly ripped the blinds off the wall and tore the table apart. I decided that tantrum has sentenced him to a childhood of adult dentists with no toys in the waiting room.

  • I took my daughter to my dentist at my last visit.  I was really surprised at how well she did and the lady who cleaned her teeth was very patient with her.  I requested the same lady next month when we go again for a cleaning.  They had her sit/lay on my lap while they cleaned and checked her teeth.

  • We go to a special children's dentist in our area. Most everyone in our area uses this dentist. They are fantastic with the kids. The office is designed for kids, so it's super friendly looking when you walk in. The rooms and chair areas are all decorated with kid friendly themes. The dental assistant brings the little ones a bath toy to choose from before they even start. They get a balloon before they leave and a goody bag of stuff to take home (standard new toothbrush, paste, floss picks, etc.) DD was pretty apprehensive at her first appointment when she was just over a year, but this last appointment, her 6 month followup, she did really well. They have DD sit in my lap in the chair and that definitely helps.

  • My dentist, I guess, was not comfy with seeing kids. He told me to see a peds dentist.  I love my dentist and have been to him for over 20 years but his office didn't have all the kiddie distractions and stuff.  So, I bring DS toa peds dentist.
  • I chose a pediatric dentist.  Definitely the right thing for us!  DS1 is a worrier and was very anxious.  The assistant was awesome with him, sang songs while she looked in his mouth.  The dental chairs were all kid-sized and they even had tv's at each place for the kids to be distracted by.  He had an awesome experience because they were geared specifically towards kids!

But call your insurance or talk to HR before you decide not to go!  Ours technically does not accept our insurance but I decided it was worth it anyway, there were no pedi dentists in our area that were in our plan.  Turns out we got everything but like $20 covered by insurance anyway!

That's a good point.  Thanks.  I need to really get on this and get it figured out before the twins are ready!
