Help me wrap my brain around this...

So, bumpers are bad due to the increased risk of SIDS and keeping too much carbon dioxide around the baby when it sleeps. Wouldn't bassinets do the same thing? Maybe this is my irrational brain trying to think too much too early, but I thought of this when I was putting my bassinet next to my bed in preparation of tonight's induction. Please help me with this one ladies!

  • I agree w/ what you are saying but honestly they change the recommendations all the time that I'm not sure what is safe or not.  DS used a bumper and a bassinet and so will this LO.

  • Bassinets usually have lower, thinnner sides allowing more airflow.  The bumper thing is still up in the air though. Our birth teacher actually told us not to go bumper free.  If baby's limbs stick through the bars or head bangs into the bars baby can be injured.  She just recommended getting breathable bumpers.

  • I am totally there with you.  I have been completely anti-bumper and keeping the crib well ventilated.  Then we bought an UPPA Baby Vista which has a bassinet so he can sleep with us for the first few weeks.  I'm actually still a little freaked about it but everyone keeps telling me it's fine and even my most neurotic friends have done the same.  I went with the theory that he's safer in the room with us in a bassinet than in a crib down the hall by himself.  I just don't understand why they can't make bassinets more like mini cribs without the padded walls.

I had this stroller w/ DS and loved the bassinet!

  • Thanks ladies! We were given a bassinet, actually one of the Burlington Basket Factory recalls but we got it fixed with the recall kit, and it has plastic sides and is about as deep as the bumpers on the crib are. I don't know why this just hit me, but it did. We are keeping a fan on in our room at all times (to keep the air circulating) so hopefully that helps too. I'm glad I'm not the only person thinking about this!

  • Never thought of the bassinette thing- seems like a similar situation.  I got breathable bumpers for our crib because it's slatted all around and I didn't want his poor arm or something to get stuck.they were recommended over the regular bumpers so why not...

  • i really want to use my bumper, it makes the crib look so cute! lol but i dont want to risk anything since no one is certain about using them or not.

so i got a breathable bumper but its just not the same haha.

  • I don't really get it...they have no clue what can really cause SIDS...When i did my crib I added the bumpers thinking I woudl remove them but they look so cute and I cannot imagine that they 'trap' carbon dioxide since the entire top of the crib is open!!! It's crazy to me.  I mean I could see it if the crib was enclosed maybe?

to me I would worry more about stffed animals and blankets suffocating the baby.  I plan to use bumpers until the baby can stand in the crib.

  • I think that it's not the same as a bassinet because they are only made to be used up to about 15 pounds, and I don't think baby can roll over at that point.  The bumpers become a hazard when babies can roll over/move around more, because they can roll into the sides restricting their breathing.

(please keep in mind this is my theory, I haven't looked it up...but to me that would make sense)

I'm pretty sure you're correct.  I've read several things that relate to that theory anyway!!

  • I got a regular bumper made for the back and ends only since the back is against the wall and the ends of my crib are solid.  Then I put a breathable bumper on the front  (slatted) side for peace of mind.  So in my mind I get the cuteness of the bumper, but the safety of breathability!
