Biz trip and still BFing...

Is there anybody out there who had to go out of town while they were still BFing? I'm going on a biz trip next week and I still BF twice a day (morning and before bed) and she takes a bottle 3 times during the day. Any advice? I'm just worried that she's going to be a bear for DH when he tries to put her to bed. The bedtime feeding is more of a comfort feed for her and I'm not sure how she'll take to a bottle at that time. Hmmmmm...

Re: Biz trip and still BFing...

  • I had to travel for work a couple of times while I was still BF DD.  It wasn't an issue at all.  I was impressed by how well DH and DD did without me!  I'd left enough pumped milk that she was still able to get BM at the feedings where that was what she was used to.  She had no issues with taking it from a bottle.  Travelling with the pump is a bit of an inconvenience, but since your down to 2 feedings a day it shouldn't be hard to keep up with.  Good luck!

  • I traveled when DD#1 was about 4 months old. I was gone for a week. Traveling and pumping wasn't fun (I was getting up 2x at night to pump to keep with DD's schedule at the time), but do-able. As far as taking bottles morning and night, DD#1 did fine for DH because she was already taking bottles at daycare. Bottles weren't new at all and she and her daddy got some nice bonding time.

  • I have a trip scheduled for late April and I am still feeding DS myself for every feeding. He's had the occasional bottle from the nanny when I have to be somewhere or from MIL when we have date nights, but it is rare.  And he has been nursed to sleep every night of his life so far.  I am a wreck about it.

Those of you who said you did it successfully, were you "good" pumpers?  Part of my concern is that when I pump I don't get a lot and I'm afraid if I have to pump exclusively for a week I will lose my supply and not be able to meet DS's demand when I get back.  Did anyone else have a simillar issue and how did you get over it?

(Sorry to hijack the post, I have been worrying about this for a few weeks now)

  • I traveled when J was just 8 weeks old, but he also took a bottle with his caregiver so he did fine.  Be sure to follow your BFing schedule when you pump.  You can ask for a small fridge when you travel to store the BM in.  Most hotels will provide it free of charge.  At the end of the week, I had a cooler full of BM and was able to go through security fine.  They had me move to a special line and they looked in the cooler, but it was no big deal.  You should XP on breastfeeding or working moms, they have a ton of valuable advice.

  • ScoobyM - I was not a v. good pumper... when I would pump during the day at work I would get so little compared to what DD needed.  That said, once I returned to work and was pumping during the day, DD was getting 1-2 bottles of formula per day to make up what I wasn't pumping.

I was pleasantly surprised w/ how much I was able to pump while I was out of town for a few days.  It worked out better than I feared and I come home with a great stash of milk for the freezer.  DD picked up w/ BFing again w/ no problems.

Like Shelley said - call the hotel ahead of time to see if you can reserve a fridge in advance (the sometimes have a v. limited #) and remind them again at check-in.  And pack a cooler and storage bags.  The most difficult part of pumping while away for me was pumping around meeting schedules during the day.  I found myself doing this while others were eating lunch and I'd return late from breaks.

My guess is your son will go to sleep fine  w/ a belly full from a bottle!  Fingers crossed for you.

  • I lucked out and didn't have to do anything like that!  I have no advice but really hope things go well!
  • I just got back from a 5 day/4 night work trip away from DD...it was my first time being away from her for longer than 18 hours! It was tough...my mom and DH stayed with her. She still nurses about 4 times/day and will only take a minimal amount of my milk in a cup. She refuses cow's milk. So they offered her my milk 3-4 times/day and just made sure to give her lots of snuggle time. They said the first night was awful...she was up about every hour and then slept like a log the next day. After that she was fairly "normal"...

Now that I am home though...she's been quite cantankerous and vacilates between being SUPER clingy and then mad with me. I hope it passes soon...I've been home since late Saturday night.

BTW, I made sure to pump 4-5/day each day I was gone. I've always had a good supply though (and an oversupply, really, until about 6 months ago)...I brought back 75 oz.!
